« on: June 01, 2007, 09:29:46 PM »
Basically I want some of the stuff on my old computer on my new computer(I-tunes library, AH films and screenshots, tasteful movies, music videos ect.) Can someone possibly give me an idea what is the easiest way to do it. Keep in mind that I'm a complete idiot

It would help to know what os both machines are using as well as if they are, or can be, networked together.

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to just burn backup copies and move them to the new PC that way. This is especially true in the case of I-tunes...

I would burn copies, but the cd writer on my old computer is dead.

you could pick up one of these - probably something you'll use on more than just this occasion too...

Do you already have some kind of home network? If so you could just set up file sharing and drag and drop the files XP file sharing instructions

can I set up a network with just a LAN cable, or do I need a bunch of technical gadgets?

that flash drive may do well, not to expensive either. Thanks for the reply.

You could set one up using a crossover cable between the 2 pc's and assigning a unique ip address to each computer. Then enabling file and print sharing.

A crossover cable looks just like a regular network cable but is wired differently - you could probably get one @ a Comp USA or other PC retailer.

If this is the route you wish to take I wouldn't mind writing up some instructions with some screen shots of the settings you'd need to use.

I think I have a cat6 cable and my two comps are right by each other. Will that work?

It won't work if it isn't a cross over cable - it's pretty tough to tell by looking at it if you don't really know what you're doing/looking for. If you're using (or have used) that cable to connect to a cable modem, router, etc it isn't a cross over cable.
