Bronze, Silver, and Gold Arena's
« on: June 06, 2007, 05:13:42 PM »
Was going to post this in Shawks thread, but with all the trash talk I figured it would just get buried.

HTC does a lot more right than wrong in my book so I tend not to complain much. Nevertheless I have had more than a few squad nights trashed due to the current design. We can’t fly mid or early war because the ENY would go off the scale and we are unable to fly something we might enjoy as a squad. At times when we have tried the late war the cap limit suddenly changes and our guys can’t get in. So we all have to switch arena’s, pick another target, setup another mission assuming the ENY is not an issue. Before you know it 30 minutes are gone as we just try to get a mission together. It is very frustrating at times. It is not nearly as squad friendly as it was.

How about?

Bronze Arena - Open up a rolling plane set arena that would move from early war, (week 1) to mid war (week 2) to late war (week 3). Use a watered down ENY/perk system and use Rank. Rotate the plane set every 3 weeks.

Silver Arena - Open up a new late war that does not have any rank but does use the ENY/perk system, but again watered down. Leave the cap alone so squads can fly together. Triple the number of troops needed to capture a field.

Gold Arena – A 2nd late war arena designed as the old Main Arena was, rank and all.

Anyway just a thought. Flame away or improve/edit as you see fit.

Unless there is a better system for assigning rank to players, I will not support any system that uses rank.  It will only encourage milkrunning etc. etc.

Fulmar the Silver would not have any rank per my suggestion. So this still would not work for you?

I think you would have to remove rank from the rotating arena - or at least have rank gained there apply only in that arena - or it would just become the home of score milkers on early and mid war weeks.

Rank in one arena should not apply to another, period.
Just like Rank in the SEA or AvAhas nothing to do with rank in the main.
That right there is going to help stop the milk running.

Also tour stats should NEVER be based on just a few sorties.
If someone has less than 10 sorties in a category they are not flying it enough to stay active and should not get top billing. Thats only 1 sortie every 3 days. If your really #1 you should have no problem keeping up with that.

there is nothing fundamenatlly wrong with the existing playing system in AH.  the problem (if there is one) is human nature.  there is nothing inherently wrong with human nature either.  in fact human nature is what makes life so interesting to me.  as long as there is score to be kept some people will do just about anything to improve their game.  without score there is no reason to play.

HTC has it pretty well wired down currently.  I would be hard pressed to come up with a better scheme.

Dont'd hold your breath...there will be no changes till TOD is finished.

I wish they had never thought of TOD.

....think about all the cool planes and maps we would have by now,  if time was not wasted on the "beached whale" known as TOD

I'm suspicous that for most players, rank is much less a motivator than what the player sees as success. And that's where most of the gameplay problems come from, human nature being human nature.  A fair chunk of players find success primarily when they have way more friendlies than there are enemies.

That's a big problem if you're talking about fundamental changes in arena mechanics. Any system has to prevent large population "dysfunctional social environments" and prevent massive side imbalances. Not sure this proposal addresses either, since it's specifically weakening the only systems that have made a dent in those problems.

There was a time when I was heavily involved with what was at the time the number one WWII air combat flight sim.  They then made a number of changes to the arena's and arena systems that negatively affected squads in a number of ways.  Some well established squadrons that had been the linchpins in supporting the sim for years were decimated, most suffered in a myriad of ways, and within a year or two most established squadrons were mere ghosts of their former selves.

The sim is practically dead now.

I pray HTC doesn't make the same mistake.
