Possible terrain bugs...
« on: June 07, 2007, 01:16:01 PM »
We're looking into some strange happenings on the Finrus map... has anyone else had any rearm pad oddities?

The Badguys apparently spawned into some invisible object on takeoff from field 4... anyone else have a similar event?

The Nightmares had some trouble with the N.E. Re-Arm pads at one of the fields.

As I recall, when one of our members attempted to enter the re-arm area they struck an invisible object and received damage that destroyed their plane.

Dux, I think field A4 is the porked one where you could only use the hangar spawn. If it is the one then the other spawn points there will, yeah, spit you into an object from the twilight zone. This hosed up a whole group of guys when I was CO in this setup a while back. Not sure of the re-arm pad but I'd just assume you'd run into the same thing trying to taxi. How about just using another field to be on the safe side?

I dunno, Drano... thing is, Finrus was rebuilt (during the last month after the latest update) using only standard objects; I suspect that the bug might have something to do with how the new transition tiles and their clutter interact with an adjacent filed tile. If this is so, then this bug is potential at any similar field.

But at this point, I can only guess at what the cause is or what a solution might be. Standby...  :(

A quick look (I tested only about 20 fields) seems that most of the bugs have gone.  The problem that persists at A4 from the previous maps is that the terrain impedes onto the field and lies over the runway at each end.

This is easily checked by spawning a plane in the hangar and driving to the northern end.  Here you will find a rearm pad out in the bush.  You can't use it to rearm though and it will flicker in and out of view as you approach.  "If" this is the only one left then it shouldn't be hard to work around.  At least for this week the CIC's should check all the fields they are planning to use (including those where you might rearm) and make sure they work.
I get really really tired of selective realism disguised as a desire to make bombers easier to kill.

Roger that, Dantoo.

I checked out the terrain last night... the problem with A4 is that the small field with the single diagonal runway was turned 45°, so that the runway faces N-S. Since a diagonal runway is much longer than the runways on the N-S/E-W axes (1.41414 longer if you remember your trig) the runway overruns the edge of the tile and carries into the next tile, which is a forest tile.

If A4 must be used, spawn at the hangar, and don't plan on using the rearm pads there.

The problem with A30 "rearm bug" is a bit more subtle... essentially, the taxiway runs right alongside the adjacent tile, which is on a slope. If you wander onto that slope, it is just steep enough that it will dip your wings into the ground, at least with an LA5 it will, and cause damage.

Since this is not really a bug, the only way to avoid this is to use proper taxiing techniques, and stay on the taxiway.
