Training for trip to Mars
« on: June 20, 2007, 10:31:25 AM »
The European Space Agency is looking for 6 people to go into isolation tanks for 17 months to simulate a trip to Mars.  There will be limited supplies, no privacy, and no commucation with the outside world except by radio - with a realistic 40 minute delay.  The idea is to test the group dynamics under those conditions...

no thanks.

Roughly $115,340 USD when you include the two 105 day tests. Not a lot of money when you think about it. I can make that easily in two years without going to Russia and being locked up in a test tube.

Designs I've seen for habs and Mars Direct allow at least a little privacy in your rack.  Why communications limited to radio?  I'd think email and newsgroups would be supported, since any trip to Mars will have a live feed for video most, if not all, of the time.  Delay can be worked around for data transmission.  Plenty of information can be sent "up" on request.

Sounds like the test would be even more difficult that the real thing.
