Question about the Damage Model...
« on: June 29, 2007, 10:34:05 PM »
I was flying 8 player the other day (usually on MA, but was in the mood to just screw around), and started to trail a 110 G2. He was on the tail gun, so Id stay below his firing horizon, then pop up and fire a burst into his wings. Inevitabally (I think I spelled that right) I took hits from the double 8mm (I think) tail gun on the 110. Most of these ended up on the left wing of my 109 G2, giving me this sight as I looked out over it-

I also have a picture of a B17 I flew over a feild and a town in range of the ack, and somehow survived two passes and an Me 163 attack.

My question is, does the damage sustained to my wing do anything beside look pretty (or not so pretty) ? Do the holes and twisted metal, especially in my  pretty extreme cases, do anything to the structural integrity of the wing, or the airflow over the wing? Id imagine that holes would cause a lot of drag, and possibly some stability issues. As for the actual wing structure, I dont know. If it hit a spar, It would probably be pretty bad, but I dont think a hole in the skin would do anything... maybe. How is this modeled in-game?

Hm, I suppose I have the same type of question. I was wondering if there is hit point type damage. Say I land go to refuel and bump into the building. Does that damage that wing "5 points"?

Perhaps we should conduct some tests. "How many licks does it take to...take off a wing"

Hi,

afaik it only looks good regarding the FM, but the impacts are not forgotten, the airframe will get more weak.

Greetings,

It does not disrupt airflow, but I believe it stresses the wing. Meaning a spit with healthy wings can rip them off if it pulls too many Gs, but a spit with a heavily damaged wing can rip it off more easily.

It won't, however, slow you down, reduce lift, etc.

It's a little of both.
