It's a joke, wood. Follow along: British spelling is "rumour"; Fourth of July gets credit for American independence; later, US spelling rules change to drop the "u" in many words the Brits spell with "-our"; resulting in US spelling of "rumor".

SO without the 4th, we'd be spelling "rumor" as "rumour"!
