motherboard memory question
« on: July 08, 2007, 11:27:44 PM »
i have a question about an old motherboard that i am thinking about upgrading to use as a second box.  It uses 168 pin dimm sdram and and says that it can use 2 256 mb strips.  my question is if i get 2 512 mb strips will it work at 1gig memory or will it be capped at 512.  The price is nominal difference and i would like to get the gig if it will work.  Hopefully someone who knows the answer to this question will let me know.
thanks

If you have the motherboard out where you can see it, then get the motherboard part number and search for it on the manufacturer's WEB site to see what they say.

Many of the early Pentium 4, and earlier, motherboards could only support a maximum of 512MB of RAM.

If you have X cap and you try to put >X into it, it will most likely return errors. The mobo has to support the hardware, otherwise it returns errors. I've tried to put a 1024 stick into my sister's PC but the mobo couldn't handle it, despite saying it supported one type of 1024, this wasn't it.

I'm guessing you'll just get error beeps on boot-up. You need to check the documentation for your motherboard and only put RAM in it that it can accept.
