Ok, im a bit annoyed.

I just got AH today, and im not going to go out and buy a joystick just for this game so i'm using my keyboard. As you can probably tell I've never flown a plane before. All the different buttons for flying are a tad confusing and I honestly have such ridiculous problems flying. If anyone could tell me what the hell to do to keep a plane in the air it would be really appreciated.

While it's possible to fly with a mouse, it's pretty hard, and not many people are able to do it. If you want to have any success, I suggest getting a joystick.


There are some pretty cheap joysticks out there... some under $20 at places like CompUSA.

System requirements do state a joystick.

IMO trying to play Aces High without one is like steering your car with a cresent wrench. It can be done but it's much easier and better with the correct equipment.

This is a great game and a great community.  

You can, as stated above, fly with a mouse and some people can do it quite well but I would suggest going down to the local wal mart and picking up a twisty stick.  

Give that a whirl on your 2 week free trial and see if you want to integrate and stay with the game.

Trust me a joystick makes the game easier.

Yeh definately a joystick. Just get a budget one to start with then upgrade to something really great if you decide to later. Something with a throttle is a big help though.

And don't freak out about all the buttons, most of them you can ignore until you get more experience. About all you need to know to get started is how to raise/lower flaps and gear and change weapon. Use the joystick for all the flying stuff like throttle and steering and use the trigger to shoot obviously.

Takes time to get good at this game, so stick with it

<---bought my Saitek ST290 Pro, for $20 at radioshack...had it for 5 yrs...just bought a new one 3 weeks ago.

Buy a $20 joystik at walmart!  Saitek st290 pro

i was about 1 1/2 weeks in when i got a stick..  i went to best but and got the satiak aveator for $51 with a 2year extended replacement plan

Whether you're here for the 2 week free trial, or for the long run, you simply can't begin to grasp or master the 2+ month learning curve of this game without a joystick. A Saitek Evo provide you all the basics needed to get you started... including a 8 view HAT control, easily modified to 16 views. Throttle input, rudder input and about 8 other programmable inputs. You should be able to buy that stick for around $40 or less.

                          I'm going to chip in simply cause, like you, I'm new and dont know to much.

                          Here's my advice, and I also recommend buying a stick. Whats $40 compared to the joy it will give you razing cities, industries, fuel dumps, and airfields? Secondly, fly, fly, fly. Specialize in one or two planes of each type but try to at least fly as much as you can.

                          Print out hard copies of the info available for this game. I have a stack that I read while my bombers are gaining air in friendly territory. Or, I even bring them to work to study. Even more so hose the minds of the experienced sticks here. Start threads, and get them talking. Like pilots everywhere most like passing knowledge to others. Most of all the trainers here who are simply outstanding.

                       Don't get discouraged. Everyone is pretty helpless the first few days. I crashed so many planes I could open a hangar sale. And if I didn't crash them I just plain got shot to pieces.

                      But now after a couple weeks I can tale off and land big bombers, fight them thru "sometimes", and when I set my mind on a target the target is pretty much gone. Its a fascinating game and a nice community. Give it a chance. And "fly" a lot.
