Has anyone had problems upgrading to the 2.0 verion of firefox?

This is getting frustrating to me. I had an older version of firefox, the 1.05 with updates and it was working fine. I received a notice that there was a newer version instead of an update so I went and updated. The update to 2.0 indicated the older version had to be deleted prior to installation of the newer one so I did that. The new version installs but on starting, the program locks the system up hard. I have had to do a hard reboot after the lock up on about half of the times I tried and other times I could get firefox to eventually close but it never functioned. I've done a delete and reload of a clean download of the program and also did a defrag after deleting the program to get a new install. No help.

I haven't been able to find a download of the older 1.5 version to go back to it.

Anyone have any ideas.

I'm running XP on my system and no other programs are having a problem.

1. Is XP current on patches?  It shouldn't make a difference, but it can.

2. Is the old Firefox completely removed?  Nothing in Add/Remove Programs, no files on the drive, all references to Firefox removed from the registry?

3. Have you used an up-to-date anti-spyware program recently?  There may be something installed that you don't know about that is conflicting with the new version.  Spybot Search & Destroy or Ad-aware will clean most of them.

4. Did you remove your personal Mozilla folder in Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla, or at least rename it?  There may be a plug-in/add-on that worked fine with 1.x that absolutely chokes 2.0.x.

The 2.0 version is worth the update.  If by chance you want to stick with an older version you can use this site.  http://www.findfiles.com

It seems that the number 2 idea you listed was the culprit. In doing the uninstall it left behind multiple files and folders. I guess at least one of those caused the program to puke.

I went back and did a search for all folder named mozilla and firefox. After deleting them and downloading the program again it's functioning fine now.
