I am pretty sure the Japanese aircraft in the OP's story was not a Ki-45 "Nick"(a fighter) but rather a Ki-46 "Dinah" (a very fast PR aircraft that the Japanese used with great success).

That Ki46 looks kinda like a mini He111 but with Japanese colors and markings.

There was a problem with the gun lubricant that was used in the PTO. At high altitudes it would thicken up, which is why Klingman's guns wouldn't fire. For a time, all cannon equipped Corsairs weren't allowed to operate above 12,000ft to prevent their guns from freezing up due to the improper gun lubricant. This is also probably a major factor as to why regular Hellcat units didn't use the 20mm cannon package and kept with the .50 cals.

So I'm watching a rerun of of Dogfights (the lame kamikaze one) and I saw there was a reply to this thread. This got my wheels turning. Why do you suppose this account was not in the episode? To me, it seems a whole lot more entertaining then some 109 slamming into a b24s tail.

I suppose amerikaners are above ramming though. Only those silly japs and krauts are fanatical enough to do that

Because that episode was on units that specialized in those tactics, and as far as I know, the US didn't operate suicide squadrons. But then, the US was never in such desperate states as the Germans or the Japanese that the US had to create a dedicated suicide unit.

Closest I've heard to that kind of thing was our fighter pilots being told during the Cold War that if the Russian bombers were inbound and they were out of missles and ammo, they still had one shot left that wouldn't miss.
