Don't kill me but...
« on: July 16, 2007, 04:02:42 PM »
I honestly prefer the AH flight model to IL-2's.  I hesitate to bring this up, I'm sure it has been discussed before but...  I have spent the last 3 years or so flying IL-2, I used to fly AH1 as Ely/Elysian with JG3/.2 for a long time before that.

Like most of us, I have no experience flying high performance piston-engined aircraft.  I can't vouch for which FM is more "realistic".  I would guess they both do a fine job approximating flight on a computer.

The main reason I like AH's FM more is the planes fly different, they each have somewhat of a personality.  No matter how hard I tried, I never could feel that much with IL-2.  It always felt like I was flying the same plane, just differing engines, armament and weights.  However in AH II there are things like some planes really being much better gunnery platforms then others.  Try BnZing in an A6M5b or Mosquito, both are hard to get lined up for shots, they wobble around on their respective flight paths.  F4Us like to ground loop.  109s and P-38s compress, F6F is a terrific, stable gunnery platform.  These kind of details are everywhere and make for a much richer flying experience.

I'm glad to see HTC flourishing somewhat, the changes I've seen are good ones and it's nice to come back to.

It has, and I myself have also voiced the same opinion (all planes fly the same) about IL2. Regardless, welcome back!

If you haven't flown in 3 years you've got some relearning to do. 1.2k sniper shots are a thing of the past. 1k "still in range" shots are gone. Hit bubbles are gone, and the rounds actually hit the craft now before doing damage. Airflow code was revamped totally, removing many bugs and glitches, also changing the way many aircraft flew and handled.

You'll have an entirely new game on your hands, if you last flew in AH1.

Thanks for the info Krusty, yeah there IS a lot different.  It seemed some of the "spray and pray" stuff is gone, wasn't sure until now.  That's interesting about the airflow code.  I dunno, it all seems familiar, just maybe more detailed than it was before.

Thanks for the welcome.

For example, 190s used to dip a wing if you pulled any Gs at 250mph. Couldn't do anything. Now they're more realistic (and a bit more of a threat). They're still no spitfires, but they can get below 200mph safely now.

109s used to flop horribly at any speed and any alt, if you pulled Gs. Now that the "flop" is gone and you remain in control, they can actually turn (when flown right) and are now a major threat in the arenas, whereas before you might only think they'd BNZ you to death, now they'll knife fight you.

P51s used to have super flaps.... Well, okay, they still DO have super flaps, but less effective. F4us became the new uber plane, and P38s are like UFOs in some respects. It depends on the plane. Every plane changed in a different way.

Oh, P.S. try the C.205, one of my personal favorites (and I'm always looking to convert more to it!)
