Rudder troubles ??
« on: July 26, 2007, 04:31:56 PM »
I am very new to this game and I am using a Saitek AV8R joystick.  It has been calibrated several times but for some reason when I am trying to take off it pulls the the left.  I can correct it by using the joystick and once in the air with the gear up if I hit "x" and set auto pilot.  Then if I remove auto the problem is gone but comes back now and then.  It's easy to correct and fly in off line training map but in the real game I think it would put a hurting on me.

Any one have any idea's

First, try calibrating in windows (before you start the game). Then go in-game and calibrate it.

If it persists, bring up clipboard and go to the settings to the "map controllers" choice. Choose the rudder axis and click the "advanced" checkbox. A page will swing out on the clipboard. Move the rudder and watch the green line (it represents rudder movement). Make sure it goes all the way up and all the way down. Then let go of the rudder entirely. Does it stay mostly centered?

It could be that you're adding rudder pressure to the stick as you hold it. Make sure you're not twisting it as you fly around.

EDIT: Oh, and on the ground it's going to pull to one side because of the engine torque. You need to correct with rudder until you're airborne. Pulling back on the stick locks the tail wheel and helps you stay (mostly) straight.

Are you using "auto takeoff"? If not then in a single engine a/c engine torque will pull you to the left. That's entirely normal, just like real life. That throws some people at first.

But it shouldn't do it after you're up in the air. Checking the advanced tab will let us know if the rudder is off-center or if he's just not used to it.

I did as you said with re-calibrating and tweaked my deadzones a little.  And after that and pulling back a little while moving down the runway works great.

Thanks fellas

I have the same stick and never had an issue with it until recently.  It feels as if the aircraft flops around when I make slight moves moreso than it ever should.  Mostly, after I picked up these farking rudder pedals that I'm still not so hot about.
That stick was awesome.  IN hindsight, I could easily go back to just using that stick without pedals.  Setup the BIG button below the hat for looking up and you have a very easy to use view range for up and mid which is pretty much what you need.
I would suggest you calibrate in game AFTER you calibrate in windows.
If you still continue to have issues, then it's a faulty stick.

Mine might be bad as a large piece of luggage fell on it recently so I may be heading back for another - I love the hat on it and the fact that the twisty part of the stick takes a little effort keeping you from making inadvertent maneuvers.

Sincraft,

if you've just added rudder pedals or other USB hardware to your computer, the stick issues may not be stick related, but USB power related. I was having some spiking/slow response/bounce issues with my brand new CH equipment - bought a powered USB hub - fixed everything up nicely.

My $.02
