Need some help

I want to start making films from some recordings I have but am not sure how to go about doing it. Here is the problem I am running into: I am using Windows movie maker and when I try to import my films, it basically tells me that it can't use that format. So I changed them over to an AVI format, and it still won't let me do it.
Am I doing something wrong?? Or, is the windows movie maker a piece of crap and should I get a better one?? Thanks for all the help in advance!!

You could try something else. Get FRAPS, then go into full screen mode in the Film Viewer on the part you want to edit. Then record it using FRAPS, then try to edit it using the Windows Movie Maker.
