Good luck JB73!

Get a couple of new servers and dump the rest. I bet a couple of not so expensive boxes will be safer, easyer to back up, cheaper to manage and ALOT cheaper and easyer to keep cool. Im NO networking guru whatsoever but ive seen more than a few serverrooms looking like what you describe and prolly worse too... Must be a nightmare to keep running.

Yikes, no backups, etc

I'm from an environment where those are audit items, so they just have to be done.

Enjoy.

Thanks all for the well wishes ;)

1st day, and all is well so far lol.

Thats exactly what I would like to do Nilsen, but I don't have a "budget" of anything right now. Theoretically I could run 3 boxes, and use virtual servers, except some of the very specialized software we use. Our imaging server alone has some 600GB of scanned in image data, and our UNIX box has 6+ years of database on it.

those each must be their own machine.
I don't know what to put here yet.

Congrats JB 73,
I just resigned from the contract with Homeland Security today. I have been picked up (starting the 20th) as the CIO for the company. It also is a mess, but now for a change I'm the boss.

That's right No more DETROIT!!!!!!!!!!! I'm outta here.

What unix you talking about -- some play with virtualization nicely.  The 600 GB shouldn't put you off of virtualizing the servers.  If you are talking about old equipment, when you do get a budget the new servers will have more than enough horespower to combine workloads.

Congrats on getting the responsibility.  Good luck in sorting it out.

it's some old OLD system custom made for our trucking business. customer service accesses it through a terminal emulator with the old blue screen look.

you know the more I look into this network it's more like looking into my new babies eyes.... only I want to gut it and rebuild it from scratch properly, with proper scalability built in :rofl

It's kind of like getting a used car that is ripe for a rebuild / tuneup, and you can wait to get your "wrench-on".
