Bomber gunner business
« on: August 10, 2007, 09:40:15 PM »
Im learning as I go along, along with some good tidbits and snacks Ive been reading and picking up. Today I shot down 3 bogeys while gunning after a bomb run. Heres what Im learning.

Any aircraft with canon you have to get on as far as possible. If they get to close you are dead meat. I encountered 2 110s tonight, "not a pleasant prospect in a bomber". Luckily either the airplane isnt super manueverable, or the guys flying it werent. The first one I engaged at 1,000 k with little 3 pr 4 one stage shots. Once I got the range on him I let him have it with all 3 17s and got him before he got close enough to hit me with cannon. Later, after I was down to 1 bomber, a 110 just got to close and shot me down.

Another flight I was in Jap KI-67s. A P-47 got high right on me and I jumped to the RH 67. I was able to drive him down with the top cannon and he made the mistake of going right into my rear at which time I blew his wing off. Another bogey, a 109, stayed on me but between speed and gunnery I was able to fend him off and get the aircraft home.

What I'd really like is to get some of the experienced bomber-gunner guys talking. Im all ears guys.;)

A good way to suck someone in while in Ki-67's is to wait until they are around 1000-800 out. Hit Alt-X to go into auto climb. Give it a second or two then hit X and level out. This will do two things. It will generally make them climb up to you and second it makes you bleed speed. If timed right they will pop up high and behind you at around 200-400 right in the middle of your top turret envelope. Zap em with the 20mm and it's done. The Ki-67's speed builds up quick so it doesn't take too long to be going over 300MPH again.

Anouther good thing to try is jump into one of the other bombers. I believe it's Ctrl-1,2,3 to jump from plane to plane with 1 being the lead plane in the formation.

Thanks for the advice Hornet. I'll try that. Ive tried accessing these controls from the gunners seat but they dont work so I guess you have to pop in and out of the seats to get it going right?

I had a bad end to a really good KI day. First off I expected more range with 1/2 tank but I was running out. So I cut power, started decending, and ran smack dab into a carrier group I didnt even know was there. Had 6 fighters on me out of nowheres. Other then that it was a good day in the bombers.
