The problem is on the return trip for your network data patckets.

I cannot reach your router in hop #3.  Instead I am getting, what appears to be, a router flap going on.  Different routers are showing up in the traces each time I run it.  None are the one in hop #3.

I noticed the retunr trip is through Level3.  That's not good.  Packet loss on thier network is going to happen.  It has always been like that.  Looks like RR is switching to them as has Comcast and almost all the other cable networks.

I can only speculate as to why that is happening.  Costs.  Level3 is cheap.

Thank you for taking your time and looking into this for me.

Looks like i have 2 options.

1) Stay with RoadRunner and hope it gets better.

2) Change internet services and hope i get something better.

I will call RR and see what may be happening, in the meantime do you have any recommendations for an internet service that does not use Level 3?...or gives a better connection without packet loses.

Thanks again Skuzzy

That one is showing packet loss on your local area network.  Are you running on a wireless connection?

Yes. I have a D-Link......... DI-624 Wireless Router running a Belkin Cat 6 line to my second computer.

I disconnected it from my computer and i am getting those packet loses as seen in the first photos on Hop 14. The last photo is taken with the D-Link still connected.

At times when i am playing AH my son will be playing CS or another online game. We have been doing this for about a year or so and get booted (both of us) about 1-3 times a month. This last week it has been everytime we are up and also now without him on the computer.

One thing i have not done is completely disconnect the Wireless router play AH and see if i get discoed. If the packet loses in Hop 14 are enough to discoe me than it wouldn't matter because that is without the D-Link hooked up. Right?

I am going to get ahold of RR and see if they will change out the Toshiba Cable Modem and what do you think get a better Wireless router, one for gaming?

I have my computer guy at work that can help me.

If you are stuck with wireless, the only way to reduce the bit error rate is to slow down the LAN speed.  Most of those routers have a way to reduce the speed of the wireless link.

You will still get bit errors (no way to 100% stop them), but by reducing the speed you will also reduce the occurrance of bit errors.

Thanks Skuzzy. I think i will change out that router to a better one, not wireless and see what happens. I have a sneaky suspision it is the D-Link causing most of the problems.

I'll touch base if i have further problems.

Your help is always appreciated:aok

Don't know if this is true or not, but I've been told 12-18 month is the life span of a router, also the warmer the router gets the shorter the life span. My first linksys lasted 18 months, my D-link only made it 10 before it started giving me trouble connecting and staying connected. I'm on another Linksys now.

Hey thanks, i think i have had my D-Link for about 3 years. I live in an area that gets temps around 106 in summer. At times the house is around 85 when were gone. It is exposed to higher temps than nml.

Sounds like im due for a new one. Any ideas on a good router for gaming?

You want it to have DHCP and NAT built in. Without DHCP it's just a switch, and without NAT you will most likely lose vox.

Not that it really matters for the purpose of this thread, but the above is  not true. It is true that the normal home router has DHCP built in but you can elect to not use it and use static addressing if you want. With or without, it's still a router.

Ok to mop up this thread and give it closure.

I did not need to buy a new router.

On the ping plotter if you lose minor packets here and there it will not give you a disco. I continue to lose packets of minor consequence ( no disco)

My router was giving me massive packet loses and bang discoed.

I upgraded the firmware on the D-Link site (192.168.1.0) and so far no discoes.

Why after 3 years it did this i do not know. The upgrade was from i believe a 2004 version to a 8/2006 version.

Oh well, lovely computers, makes life easier, but at the expense of chewing up massive amounts of time.
