The hope of new build P-51s
« on: August 21, 2007, 05:24:40 PM »
http://www.flugwerk.de/p51.shtm

his is great news, to all warbird fans, who have an ongoing interest
for the P-51/ TF-51 pursuit or fighter-trainer aircraft !

Led by our enthusiasm, we have decided to continue "to do what we can do best", in that we are building brand new structures for yet another great warbird, the P51/TF-51 Mustang. Flug Werk GmbH has already proven its capacities and abilities to reconstruct a complete aircraft type, which was otherwise almost extinct, such as with the Fw 190 - at very affordable prices.

We are ( currently ) offering structural assemblies like complete wings, which will be followed by empennages and fuselages in the near future. All assemblies can be ordered individually, in order to enable restorations to be performed on existing/original airframes. The Flug Werk structures are manufactured by a FAA-approved primary airframe manufacturer and conform to all specifications as laid down by the original manufacturer of this extremely popular warbird. State of the art alloys and materials, complying with all airworthiness standards, are used throughout the construction of the airframe components.

Yet we must stress that the use of our components in the US is restricted to Mustangs, being registered in the experimental category only. They are not intended for use on type-certified P-51's.

Well, they did 190s. More power to them. Now just need to find the engines or build them up.

Bodhi, thoughts?

People have been rebuilding Mustangs for a lot of years.  I believe that Mr. Becks P-51 was a ground up build.

As for the Flugwerk's parts being great, yeah, it is nice for another source to become available.  The big problem though is that they are all "experimental" use only, so any type certified birds (most in the US are either limited or standard) are SOL.  Plus, add to it the continued effort of the FAA to curtail Experimental Aviation, and the risk will be that the parts will be unusable in the US.

Pistons, Rings, Sleeves, Camshafts, Crankshafts, and I believe Pistod Rods are being new built now and are FAA-PMA approved.  It will not be long before they start making cases and pans in my estimation.  As for water jackets, there are loads of them around.  Valves are a dime a dosen.

Cool
So Merlins will be running for some time, what about Allison V1710s and the various radial engines?

So at this point is the FAA the biggest threat to keeping these planes in the air?

I know we have about 20 Allisons, and only one aircraft that uses them.

Allison cores can be had for about $5K a piece.

The FAA is a big threat as is Senator Carl Levin D-MI.  He continually brings up the military de mil act that includes Warbirds evey time.  Needs to worry about fixing the ATC situation and make the airlines pay there way instead of mess with something that should be placed on a pedestal.

The de mil act would ground or destroy warbirds?

Yeah, EAA and a few other aircraft associations publish newsletters about this every time it happens. I think aeronews.net covers it every time it comes up.

The Merlin is fine, I suppose...  but a nice supercharged 6 rotor Wankel based on the Renesis design would be wicked.  Sure, it wouldn't sound quite the same, but the smooooth power would be fantastic.  Of course, you'd use every bit of of that smooth hp to outrun the enraged Merlin drivers who were howling at the idea of a Mustang w/o a piston engine.
