I didn't think the Sherman was powerful enough to penetrate the front armor of a StuG.  Here is a photo of a StuG that took two shots from a Sherman (746th Tank Battalion) outside of St. Mere-Eglise.

Nice group.

Usually takes 10-15 AP (penetrating) hits at that range in AH for me.

I wonder what the range was, had to have been close.  Also wonder if it was a 76mm Sherman, as opposed to a 75mm one.

Also, what exactly would be "the front" ? The one section where the two shots landed? What about just above that, all that space around the gun? Is the armor the same thickness their too?

Second image looks more like a StuH42, a StuG with 105mm artillery. Frontal armor on superstructure was 8cm as well.
Immense damage caused by cooked-off ammo, mostly HE rounds with lots of propellant.
Anothr hit is seen on the tracks and one in muzzle brake

If something hit the muzzle brake and fragments travelled down into the barrel it could of caused any loaded round to go off which would of resulted in an internal fire and explosion. Hence why the rear was peeled back and the huge hole front right.
