What we need to realize is that the death penalty is no longer meant to deter crime, or instill fear. It's not about rehabilitation, I don't believe. What we, who are proponents of the death penalty want IMO, is simply Punishment! To have the perpetrator's life ended the way in which an innocent life was taken. As the driver of a 'get away car', what did he think MIGHT would happen when a gun was introduced into the mix that night? That they all might break out in the singing of campfire songs? Give me a break!

Two people walk into a liquor store, one carries a handgun.  One person distracts the clerk while the other person walks up behind him and shoots him in the head. The person who drove them there is waiting with the engine running expecting to get his share of the money and a little hootch. The driver hears a shot, and starts to worry. Meanwhile the two inside drag the clerks body into a back room, and leave with their money, cigarettes and some liquor. About 3 miles form the liquor store, they are stopped on a minor traffic violation. The three men start to act in a very agitated manner. The young officer, sensing something out of place, calls for backup. Further investigation revealed their handgun and their involvement in the liquor store robbery and murder.

Should they all face the 'Needle'?

Laser, your statement is patently untrue. Every one of those that have received the death penalty has been deterred from ever hurting another person again.

I wasn't talking about deterring those who have committed crimes, but those that will commit crimes.

On a purely intellectual level, I'm not particularly for the death penalty - in my mind two wrongs don't make a right. On the other hand, I've never had my life affected by one of the many, many sick bar-stewards out there. If society has decided the punishment for certain crimes is death then so be it.

What I do think is wrong is the stringing out of the process. Keeping someone on death row for 10 years whilst various lawyers wrangle over his fate is not on. If you're gonna do it, have the courage of your convictions and just f'in do it. Dawn the morning after sentencing would be about right.

Your statement implies an assumption that those who have committed a crime won't commit another one, even the same one. As I said before, every one of those folks has been deterred from hurting another person AGAIN. Just because it does not deter everyone every time does not mean it is not a deterrent.
