I saw Claude today and found out the Tuskegee Airmen were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal not the Medal of Honor. It was awarded to pilots, crew and support personnel of the Tuskegee Airmen.
Claude flew a B25. There were 4 squadrons of B25s in the group.
He never saw action and he told the story that his squadron had their orders to ship to Okinawa but the dropping of the A bombs ended the war and his orders were cancelled. He told me his biggest fear was getting the bomber to Hawaii due to how close the fuel situation would be. Plus he said that there were Kamakazi attacks happening in the Hawaiian area.
Fascinating visit!
