couple of things in the article.... the cars in question cost $400 more than the regular version and do not get any better milage..... maybe a tad less... If something goes wrong with em (they are more complex) it costs more to fix em..
and... the "regular" version is not much more dirty... In fact... if you tested each version over say 10 years.. the pollution output would be a tossup depending on state of tune and way they were driven.
As was pointed out... a weed whacker or lawnmower is much more pollution in a year of weekly use than any modern car is in 12,000 miles of normal driving..
plus.... we cause more pollution spilling gas while filling our cars than we can remove with smog devices from the car itself.
