try an even shorter convergence, say...275-300...and see what difference that might make.

Like said above.

Guns are close to the body, so they form a more solid hit pattern on your target.
The f6f can turn better, and in a turn fight, that often places you "behind/above" your target, making the rounds do max damage.
"Thats why vulching is so painful, hit a plane from above and they all almost always brake apart."

If i recall, dont most planes have more protection to the rear and underside of them? while the fronts and tops are fairly unarmored and have thiner skin? "to save weight as much as possible, and balance the airframe better?"

maby thats just ground attack planes, just wounderin'.

.........

Fine, ill take the easy way out. "its all in your head.":lol

Working from plan views of both aircraft and scaling against the wingspan, I reckon the guns are about 9 inches further out on the F6F than the P-51D. So in theory the F6F should hit a little worse, except at convergance.

Perhaps there is a dispersion factor built into the gunnery model. Maybe the F6F's wings flexed less under load or it was a more stable gun platform and this is allowed for.

I find it hard to bring down planes from behind, but have no problem with  deflection shots. That's one of the reasons I fly the F6F, you can move the seat up a long way and get a good field of view below the gunsight pipper for deflection shooting. The fifties are accurate out to long ranges and with convergance set to 450 yards can pick off a roper at 700 yards no problem.

Same reason i love the F6F. I haven't been taking those shots in a 51, I tried a couple times and might as well done it blind folded.
