My norton is going to expire soon.  Can anyone recommend a good anti-virus software that won't slow my cpu down.  I've installed fs autostart and it has helped, but I feel my norton is slowing down my cpu when I play AH.

Thanks

Norton slows everything down in a major way. It's the same with most of the popular antivirus programs. Also, without completely erasing (formatting) the drive, it's never going away.

I use NOD32 and have no issues, but I keep my computers rather secure.

Ditto. NOD32. Norton/Symantec consumer level a/v apps are garbage.

I'm using Kaspersky.

Doesn't seem to be too bad.   You can shut down the main .exe process from task manager, and the rest from the task bar, and it hasn't once ever minimized AH2 while playing, when i left it on by accident.

One of my favorite plusses is the ability to tell what NOD32 not to look at. Norton (supposedly) scans through everything that goes through your CPU when in auto-protect mode, but you can tell NOD32 to ignore a folder of files (such as AH's) or a certain file. That way it isn't auto-scanning and is completely idle in the background. Also, NOD32 is a tiny process compared to Norton. It runs 2 .exe's for a total of about 26.5 MB of RAM.

I use Spysweeper 5.5 with antivirus.  Works great and never had a issue with it.  It also finds alot trying to get in but doesn't, hehehehe.

I like the zone alarm.  It also had a game mode to answer any requests for programs or whatever with "deny"

Have not had problems with it running with the game on

Im using avira's antivir - scores high in tests. For a firewall im using comodo firewall pro - which scores reasonable in leak-tests. The free version of zone alarm is rated next to useless.

Both of the above software i run above are free. Although comodo is a bit 'chatty' at times.

The only problem I have with Norton Antivirus is that it is hard to *JUST* get Norton Antivirus by itself.

It normally comes with Norton Internet Security, Norton 360, or whatever the bundle of the month is, costing the same or less than NAV by itself. All that crud running at the same time is what slows a gaming system down terribly, and NAV gets a bum rap.

I pretty much get all the major AV vendors software for free, being a professional reviewer, and NAV running by itself is not any more of a resource hog than anything else in my tests, and it has a pretty good interface and a bunch of serious people backing it.

Now then.

If you don't want to pay for another av product, then I recommend AVG Free (free.grisoft.com). It gets updates reliably and regularly, is resource friendly, and the automatic scanner can be manually disabled during gaming. Also free is AntiVir from http://www.free-av.com/. It does well on those german tests, and so far it seems pretty OK to me. One problem is that it periodically displays a nag-screen encouraging you to buy the full version - this is disable-able with instructions at http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm, but should you really have to do that? I dunno.

As for commercial options other than NAV, Kaspersky and NOD32 are both excellent. I lean towards Kaspersky.

I agree with Tex.

I've been installing AVG Free in my clients systems years.
It's worked just fine. It's stopped attacks that norton and mcafee have let get by them. I highly recommend it. It's free! Try and see what you think.

I fully agree, AVG from grisoft is a great lightweight AV scanner.  I liked it so much I bought an enterprise license for the company I work for.
After having fought tooth and nail with Network Associates Virus Scan for years, I'm glad I did.

That being said, I do NOT run a Virus scanner when I am actually playing the game, I kill it with FSAutostart when it starts and re-enable it when I leave the game.

free.grisoft.com is the website.
