Gunning in bombers
« on: September 05, 2007, 04:21:48 PM »
1, How do you gun in bombers? Whats your style?

2, What other tips and snacks can the experienced guys offer up?

3, ie: How far away do you engage? What specifics gunnery tactics do you use for specific fighters? Whats your favorite bomber to gun out of? How do you prepare for the bad news angles the experienced fighter pilots come at you with?

4, I want to get the guys who have been gunning successfully for years here talking. Thats the best training tactic Ive ever found, that of "listening". I'm still in that stage where I'm either a superstar or cant hit the side of a barn. Mostly I want to force fighters to fight my kind of battle and keep them away from my bombers. I'm listening closely here.

Thank you.

I like gunning out of Lancs.  I have tracers off so I only fire the single gun.  The fighter thinks I'm afk until the hits start landing as he creeps closer and closer.

If you ever seen 999000 in the game, he would be the guy to learn from on this subject.  I'm not sure how good he is at giving advise, but he's a good guy, and one of the best gunners.

Well just today I figured out something that should help my gunning. I discovered that if you go to F3 view from a gunners seat with 360% rotation you can get a 360% view of all around your airplane. There have been times Ive lost attackers in my regular views. Not just that but I'll be able to watch multiple attackers better now.

My real goal is to get better shooting while maneuvering my rudders.

Today I really wnated to do some shooting, even running thru furball sectors which I normally never do. I must have fighter repellent on cause nobodys even bothering. Some guys take their strats being burned down personally but they must not be flying tonight.

Yeah, Im going to look him up thank you. There are so many facets to defending a bomber that sometimes you can go into overload. Additionally learning the angles and leads is a long, slow, painful process. Your fighting in the 3 dimensional 360% and no two angles are the same. Most of all when the fighters are 600+ or farther which is where I like to keep them. Once a cannon equipped fighter is closer then that you have serious problems.

I like to have my strategies worked out before I even see the fighter, ie: where Im going to fight, what altitude, what tactics....ect There are certain airplanes that seem to have everyone who flies them to either be competent or better. For instance the F4U-4. Ive ran into some awfully good sticks flying those things. And thats another thing, and something that makes this game even more fascinating, is that no two fighters have the exact attack profile and each one you have to gun a little differently.

I have found the F4 to be an airplane you really dont want to have air on you to dive with. Ive gotten away from low level bombing. The last time I did it was in KI-67s. I took out the target but ran into F-4s and it wasnt pretty.
