I hate websense
« on: September 07, 2007, 03:30:53 PM »
Anyone know a way around websense. I am a firefighter/paramedic and periodically I have to babysit a factory(standby for medical and fire emergencies). So needless to say I have ALOT of down time when I do this. Well this corp. blocks youtube, myspace and pretty much any other fun site. So anyone with any knowledge of how to circumvent websense would pass on a little info to me it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

P.S. I cant even check my email they block it also.

Ever heard of the term, "biting the hand that feeds you"?

Web sense is installed for a reason,  it cuts down on bandwidth use as well as stopping activities that could get the company into lawsuits.   Lot of companie's bandwith is wasted by music and youtube...

But depending on there set up you can look for proxies, Stuff like little proxy.org  a lot of times proxies are allowed through or take some time for them to be blocked.  Or set up a computer at your house to Rdp into.  But you should know  most companies I know fire people for going around web sense like systems.

Setup a vpn(if you can, astaro, hamachi) to your home network, or use goto my pc or some such pay service. Get a laptop and clearwire or some other wireless internet (most phone providers have something) then it's your machine. Get an iphone or some other smart phone and squint alot.

Or read a book.

The company didnt hire me so they cant fire me. Plus most of their rules dont apply to FD personnel anyway. Thanks Kong and Trell for the useful info.

As trell said, this advice is good advice to get you fired. I sell products that detect this activity, log it, and a nice autogenerated report ends up on your desk. I can detect proxy attempts, https proxy attempts, http tunneling, and a range of stuff at Layer 7.

Your reference to "this corp" means you access thier WIFI? If thats the case you are a guest on their network reguardless if you use your laptop or thier equipment. Which means whatever thier usaged rules are, apply to you. The group who you work for is accountable for your conduct electronicly or other wise as a guest of "this corp".  Hacking company system's is no longer amusing to Americas companies. If you are successful then get caught, you are liable and your parent company is liable. Why don't you get a WIFI card from your cel providor and pay the fee like most of us do?

What you are doing and asking for reflects badly to those who work in the IT industry on this board. Also you are making the members of this board who help you accessories. I used to work BofA's IT. I had to take classes all the time covering exactly what you are trying to do and what can happen if caught. Unfortunatly the patriot act gives a DA who has it in for youtube fans some rather nasty things to throw at you if he's having a bad time of the month.

Please be careful before publicly asking people to assist you in committing even a very tiny crime.

I was "fired" by a company I didn't work for not for goign around anything, but for using firefox instead of IE...

now I am head of IT for a different company, but I can say as a contractor on a client site (which I did for 8 years) they watch you like a hawk, and can see even when you do the above things. don't ever say "they can't fire me".. they can tell your company they are out and you are not allowed back. what do you think your company would do if they lost an account, and had an employee banned from a site for looking at something on the internet?

My network would not allow you to make a VPN to an outside site, as that is EXTREMELY dangerous to our network. what if you VPN into an infected PC? thats just begging to take down our network, there's no way I would allow a remote out unless I am doing it, ad for that I'd have to open a port on our firewall, and create a special proxy rule.
I don't know what to put here yet.

If you are there to do a job, then do what you are paid for. Bending the rules just tells the company that you are not paying attention to what they have you there for. If you are really bored bring a book.

On a sidenote, I had to deal with websense for 2 years while in Iraq, believe me, I feel your pain.  But, it serves a definite purpose, and is a neccesary "evil".  Ride it out best you can sir.
