The gist of my post is that regardless of this administration's mistakes, treating adversarial Islamists with anything but a swift and unconditional ax-blow to the neck is itself suicide.

Taking time to appreciate their culture as they plot is suicide.

Talking of respect and embracing this 'religion of peace' while their religious leaders preach death to the west is suicide.

Disliking Bush, and wishing for the enemy's eradication are not mutually exclusive.

Then I can agree with you.  I believe that we need to respond swiftly to terrorism but in the proper way.  I believe we should go after those responsible for attacks.

When it comes to their culture and religion I am not saying embrace or appreciate it but understand it.  It is important to know someone's culture so you're not insensitive to them and do something to upset them.  I'm not saying that we need to follow their culture and risk our safety by being 'politically correct'.  What I mean can best be summarized by an example I experienced. I used to be a real estate agent when i was putting myself through college.  New York is a very diverse place and when dealing with clients I had to be sensitive to what kinds of things might upset my client.  I had a few Muslim clients who were very nice down to earth people.  One of my clients, his wife wore a hijaab, or covering, over her hair, a lot of women of the Muslim faith do not believe in touching another man but their husband for any reason, so when i met them I would not shake her hand but would shake her husbands hand.  Did I find this strange? Yeah a bit, but it is their culture and I respected it, it didn't mean I was going to embrace it and by no means did I put myself in any danger by doing so.  They even invited me over for dinner once, changed my opinion on Indian food ;)

Well Im of the type who believe when you come to live in the US you should try to "melt in" to society. Become American. Customs of your previous country, and your religions should not be a factor.  Either change, or stay home. Some groups do better at it than others.

why do we have a "patriot act"? Could it be because the you know who want us to convert or die?

if the idiotslamists did not attack us there would be no "patriot act". Put the blame where it lies.

All I hear about is how we as Americans have lost some of our freedom, but yet when I look at the world and compare us to them, we still have the most freedom. America is still 'Land of the Free' and all these people that hate us, are people who have been taught to hate freedom, Americans, Western Culture, and Demacracy.

I'm glad we are taking this war over seas, because if we hadn't, it would be in my backyard today. Ever since 9/11, I think our nation has been more safe than it has any other time in history. We haven't had a terroist attack in 6 years and we have arrested dozens of terroists in our own backyard and hundreds world wide. IMO without this war, without our American blood shed for freedom, we would have had more 9/11s. I'm not saying we are 100% safe, but we are safer than we have been in the past.

If we hadn't gone to Afganistan or Iraq I think that we would have lost more freedom than in anytime of our history, because the terroists would be in our streets, in our homes, and in our mind 24/7, 365 days a year. Think about it.

Try the suspension of habeas corpus.  The ability of the President to implement martial law at his own discretion.  The ability to declare anyone, domestic or foreign as an enemy combatant and deny them habeas corpus.  Illegal wire tapping, looking into citizens library records etc... All of these are far overreaching and powers the federal government was never meant to have and powers that no government in a "free nation" should ever have.  It's funny that it's named the Patriot act, perhaps because it's such a rape of our constitution that they needed to name it something that would make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Like you're not a real hard core red blooded American unless you support it.  Well there is nothing patriotic about it.  Just because it doesn't affect you, or because you think it hasn't affected you doesn't mean that it should exist.  Our constitution is a sacred document and something that hasn't been respected recently.  Even President Bush, showing his disrespect for our constitution has stated that he believes it's "Just a piece of paper."  The real patriots are those who support this document, not those who abandon it in fear.

Many times in history have Presidents taken away civil liberties in time of war but never before has the sacred right of habeas corpus been taken away and nullified in such a way.
