sensetivity of autopilot=ar234 crash, loss
« on: September 22, 2007, 08:40:22 PM »
i realise i've had a fair share of bad luck in the 234, and ill admit that, but i had a problem involving the autopilot. i took off an ar234 yesterday on the bishop base a25 in the first main war arena on smpizza. I took off, and, as with all 234's, it was like flying a lanc on 2 engines trying to get it airborn. 15 minutes later, i was at 3,500 feet with a climb of 1.5, and enguaged the autopilot for about 15 seconds. i did not turn the aircraft, the stick was stable and the aircraft leveled off before i looked away. i look back, and suddenly, my 234 is diving 50 feet above the water. i lost it and 33.70 points. is there any way i could be re-embursed, or the autopilot be set to a less-sensetive setting? i am a registered member with aces high, and i do not use the two-week free trial currently.

Yes; go bomb a strat target with a decent bomber. Fix the spikes in your joystick.

In the future, you might want to do a "step climb' with 234s. After clearing 250' AGL and your drones split, level off and let the plane accelerate to at least 300 mph. Begin a 2,500 fpm climb and set autopilot angle [Shift + X] until your airspeed drops to 200 mph. Level off and accelerate again, repeating the process.

If all your planes are not holding autopilot, then increase deadband a little for elevators and ailerons until it holds. If it was only this single incident, then you may not have actually set it if you typed X while the text bar was open, or some other reason.

Good luck!

"suddenly, my 234 is diving 50 feet above the water"

The reason for this is that the auto-takeoff puts you into an automatic climb at 170mph, whereas the default auto-climb tries to make the Ar234 maintain 250mph. If you take off automatically, the aircraft will climb steadily at 170mph, and if you then hit auto-climb the aircraft will try and accelerate to 250mph, which it does by diving towards the ground, thus picking up speed. Disaster ensues. Even if you don't hit the ground you will tend to "porpoise" up and down as the aircraft tries to achieve equilibrium. That will make you airsick, although thankfully the Ar234's cockpit is easy to clean, because it is mostly glass, or perspex, whatever. Just spray some vinegar water on it.

If you want an easy life you can simply take off, wait until you are clear of obstacles, engage auto-level, wait until you are at 250mph, and only then engage auto-climb. The same holds for all the aircraft, particularly the Me262, although that is set to auto-climb at about 270. The Me163 is probably set at a much higher number but I have never used auto-climb in that machine.
