B-25H Tactics so far
« on: September 18, 2007, 03:14:25 PM »
We've had a little time to evaluate the aircraft over the past few weeks. What tactics have evolved so far in using the B-25H in bringing its guns and bombs to bear?

What I've noticed so far:

* Cannot be flown like an A-20 with top down attack profiles. Sheds parts too quickly if you do.

* Gun passes are at very shallow angles - whether in strafer or 75MM mode.

* Resists 37mm flak rounds pretty - though will not make it back to a friendly plate with partial wing and engine shot out from that wing like an A-20 might.

Others experience is encouraged.

*Cannot pull up as quick as in an A20. Wings rip easy.

Keep it under 300, if you do go over 300 and are in a strong dive make sure your engines are powerd down.
Opening the bomb bay will also help slow you down a bit. "always"

If you drop in from 2-3k you can get a shot off at a tank easly.
The second your nose starts to get upto the horizon slam it into wep and close the door.
Try to keep it under 3-4g's on pull out or your wings will snap off.

Also helps if you are making a prolonged dive "from 5k+" that you drop speed to 250 - zero power bomb bay open, +1 or 2 flaps.

The second you start to reach 300+ you need to twist and bend thru the air with your rudder, it will slow you down alot.

I never* have a problem while diving on a target, i also have yet to snap a wing off while in combat.
Sometimes if a pullout is to much, dip a wing and apply rudder to the direction you want to go, this takes the force off alot of the planes wings and places that stress on your tail section & body.
Once your nose gets upto the horizon, make your wings flat and start climbing.

These "moves" apply to almost every plane in any high angle high speed dive, of course our b25 just happens to rip apart after 350, and dives like a rock.

Make sure you're flying either with sufficient escort, or to a target that has a firm CAP established at the target (or that your target is well out of interception range of the nearest airfield). The B-25H does not handle itself well if there's a significant enemy presence in the air.

One of the few planes that using to HO an enemy is HIGHLY recommended.

If you've got to get to your guns, make sure you're in a position that keeps your attacker from getting underneath your top turret. The tail position is WEAK and the gunner is ludicrously easy to kill. Get down on the deck to force your attacker into the arc of the dorsal turret.

Best altitude to approach is 5000ft AGL: Enough to keep you largely out of reach of all but the most exceptional Flak, manned gun and M16 gunners, but low enough that you can easily make your attack runs.

Save the pumpkins for clear shots, preferably against ground targets, or stationary opponents. Use the .50cal if an enemy fighter strays too close to your nose.

Set your convergence to max range.

The pumpkin chucker can easily knock out unarmored vehicles and any ack position WELL before the latter can return fire. If you can learn to snipe ack and M16s from range you can easily minimize your exposure to the enemy.

Against Ostwinds it's advisable to have a friendly along to act as bait and draw his fire, while you swoop in to pop him with the cannon.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I love killin' the B-25H.  I rarely GV, and i do not HO so the 75mm is not that much of a problem.  That coupled with the fact that finally it is only one buff's worth of guns shooting at me instead of three sets of guns fired by one gunner.:D  I like the bird, but I do not think it is the new end all wepon in AHII.

(Sorry for the hijack, seriously though...)

I believe people here have summed it up pretty well.  Watch the dives and the G-loads cause the wings like to go rip.  Watch the angle your attacker is coming in at, and for pete's sake don't just jump into the tail gun and fly nice an' straight.  You will go boom otherwise.  Lastly I am tinkering with a gunsight with an aiming point for the 75mm, if anyone else is dooing this lets collaborate on it. :aok

One shot in the nose with the main gun of any tank and it goes poof (which is very easy considering how low they usually seem to fly).
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Don't forget that you can deack from 3-4k out if you're  a decent shot.

Its a wonderful Task Group killer!

Best run so far, dropped in from 2k was hitting the cruiser from 4k out with max zoom, kept adjusting my sight, at 1k kicked in the MG's and as  I flew over the cruiser went down. Extended out, came back in and suck a destroyer with about 4 rounds from 3k out. CV respawned so I turned for home. Over 8 perks awarded and I was tickled pink with that sortie.

This is my favorite sight for the B25.  4k bottom of the vertical white line. 3k use the 3 staggered dashes. 2k use the 2 dashes, 1k use the single dash. Under 500 use the center dot.

Nice Gunsight.

Appreciate it.
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.
