Could Use a squad for the next FSO
« on: September 19, 2007, 08:10:41 AM »
Is there an FSO squad that needs another pilot? If so would appreciate an invite.

I would prefer Allied planes. I really really want to knock some Nik1s out of the sky.

Getback,

I think you'll find most squads want (or at least would prefer) longterm members. We all have specific "wants" but to make the FSO's work we realize we dont get our wish every time. I haven't seen our orders for frame 3 yet so I don't know what we've got. If you fly regularly you'll pull bomber, escort, JABO, defense and fighter sweep roles on both sides. So find a squad and have fun...but realize that you should make a commitment for the "long haul"....not a single frame.

Completely agree with Humble here.  It is ok to fly with a squad only for FSO, but its better if you either join that squad in the MA aswell, or at least fly with them from time to time so everybody is on the same page.  If you fly with a squad for FSO, it is always best to stick with that squad if its ok with them.  Don't jump from squad to squad each week.

If you wish to get a squad to fly FSO with regularly, then you should be prepared to fly whatever side/type of plane that squad is assigned, and let them know if you cant be there for some reason.  Registered squads have a number commitment to the event and can be penalized if they don't meet it or go over it.  So make sure you are willing to stick with a squad and fly with them every frame that you can.

If you do this, you will build friendships and confidence from the members of that squad, and who knows, you may even decide to join them in the MA if they are an MA squad.

Gaidin and Humble,

You both make powerful points. I was hoping that a couple of Bish Squads that I sometimes tag along with would see the post and invite me into an FSO Squad.

As far as the MA goes, I have absolutely no desire to join a squad there. I really enjoy the missions though and that's how I see the FSOs, as missions.

I will commit long term to an FSO squad though.

Well it is good that you will commit long term.  If you look at alot of the FSO squads, you will see that they are also MA squads.  My squad for instance is the same in FSO as the MA.  We have squad nights and run our own missions.  We dont use the mission editor for those, because its just our squad on those nights.  Having a squad in the MA is a good thing if you enjoy and share the same attitude of the guys your flying with.  Many of the MA squads are very mission oriented, many are just furball/whatever comes up squads.

Clowns of Death (my squad) Sometimes we run bombing missions, sometimes fighter sweeps, sometimes we pick a base thats being hit and defend it.  All depends on what the mood is that particular night.  Talk to the Various FSO squads and see if you can get attatched to one.  Most squads have no problems with guys joining for FSO only as long as they are willing to stick it out even when they may not like the plane that frame.

One tip, I would personally try some of the smaller/medium squads first.  I know that some of the Larger squads are so large that they have to turn guys away so they do not go over there numbers.

Will do.

I've been involved in large squads before. I don't care for them. Way back in the AW days I belonged to the VC (Vulching Clowns). The only squad I really ever enjoyed. You talk about humor and getting the job done. They were awesome, we were the #1 Fighter squad with only 7 guys. Unfortunately we made a fatal mistake and merged with the Amigos. They were less than scrupilous and we (the VC) lost our identity. It was a regretful decision by our CO.

Long story short, it would be a blessing to get with a small but active squad.(But only in the FSO)

Lunger,

Are you flying Allied planes this week?

Sorry to be so picky.

Clowns are flying Axis this FSO.  We have flown the ki84 and the 61 this FSO so far.  Any squad you hook up with will vary what side they fly every FSO and what plane they fly for every frame of that FSO.

Kinda hard to be picky about planes in FSO.

Getback, I would recomend this for your first FSO.

However for future reference, good FSO pilots are well versed in all AH aircraft. What I recommend, as you fly more and more FSO's, when flying in the MA try to only fly the AC that your side (axis / allied) is currently being assigned in the current FSO.

My squad is Axis in this current event, and I have only been flying the KI-84, N1K, KI-61, in the MA. This keeps me "brushed up" on those planes. Depending on the plane set, this can be quite a challenge in the MA, but it makes you a sharper pilot in the FSO events.

Getback,

The FSO is a bit different then flying in the MA. It's flown under a structured set of objectives which channel the action and tend to restrict range of action. It's not uncommon to ignore or avoid contact if possible....even if you have a significant advantage. Last FSO "we" (USMC/71st) pretty much ignored 3 cons as we escorted a strike package. In frame 1 of this FSO we got jumped by P-47's and 38's and decimated trying to fly close escort to our own squad (50/50 fighter/bomber split). In the 2nd frame those same 47's and 38's got chewed up (guessing they got tasked different mission).

It's not just about what plane your in, its also about your mission task. you might me in a pony...but lugging 2,000 lbs of ords or hunting a convoy/train. Even in just 1 3 frame FSO your going to get a variety of tasking....not all of which will be equally enjoyable. The fun comes in learning to accomplish even those tasks with a measure of skill. When you watch your 8 man "escort" wade into 25+ cons in the hope of buying you 15 more seconds for your bomb run {after you all flew for 40 minutes} you  realize that somehow your drop counts for more then it would in the MA.
