Best Paint or Treatment for Rust
« on: September 24, 2007, 05:37:44 PM »
I bought a very old, really crappy, pretty rusty and very inexpensive snowmobile.  About 1/3 to 1/2 of the steel body and ski surfaces are covered with rust.  There are no rust holes and the metal still has decent thickness everywhere.  This thing is a POS and is not worth a real restoration; I don’t have the time, patience or money anyway.  I’ve vacuumed out the grass and leaves and have power-washed it.  I might power sand and wire brush most of the easy to get to surfaces.  Then I just want to spray on some RustOleum or perhaps some rust treatment that you folks recommend.  I just want to slow the rusting down for awhile.  I’m sure that there are 1,000 things out there that advertise to be miracle workers; but I want to know what people have used and have actually been happy with.

remove the loose rust then use RustOleum primer for badly rusted surfaces, then spray with regular RustOleum.

i used that on my riding mower deck, it will stop the rusting.

This stuff is amazing.  Give the sucker a few coats and paint over it or whatever.  Its the only rust product that I've seen that actually works.

Yep.   My recommendation as well.   Just buy a wire brush or two for your drill and try and clean it up a bit.   Then use it.   You'll be surprised at the results.

http://www.eastwood.com  They sell a whole line of products, from rust dissolver, rust remover, and rust encapsulate. I've restored several old rides and used their products on all of them.

Good ole' fashioned naval jelly, which is used by some of the more experienced (older?) body shop guys.  It actually "eats" the rust and changes the chemical make-up of the rust (FeO2 ) *edit*  All rusty spots become black.

Not sure if one brand is actually better than the next.  It is in gel form, and is good for those hard to get to places.  Also can be rinsed off with water.

Goto any auto store and buy a spray called "Rust Treatment".  It comes in a can with a blue background.  It works just like naval jelly.  It will turn the rust black and allow it to be washed away.
