I've always wondered what people consider a good FPS?

Also, does anyone have an estimate at what the normal  FPS the human eye(brain) can process?

The only reason for the 2nd question is what would be the purpose of a video card that could do 1,000,000 FPS if the brain can only prcess 5000?  Guess it's kinda like having that supersports car in your garage that can do 215 mph and living in an area where there's bumber to bumper traffic 99% of the time.

If wikipedia can be believed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate , "[snip]frame rates of approximately 50 to 60 fps are considered minimally acceptable by some, though this can vary significantly from game to game."

I start noticing some chunkiness at around 30 or 40 if there is a lot of action.

Going by 10+ years of online flight experience.

Below 35 fps you really need to upgrade, or settle for Ground vehicles and flying troops. Its just not smooth enough for good combat flying.

35+ is playable, and mostly enjoyable. You will find yourself trying to stay away from really big furballs and fields with lots of smoke and fire.

45+ Your in the groove, you really don't need to worry about big furballs as much. And a bit of smoke or fire really doesn't pull you down below tolerable levels.

55+ As good as your eye can see, anything above this is extra, reserve for down the road if they upgrade graphics, etc. Thats not to say that you can't get into situations that will cut this in half. But they won't happen that often and the game is still playable if it happens.

In big fights I usually find 10-15 to be good for me...when I'm on climbout or something usually around 45-50.

Mine normally hang around the 40-45 range.  Just making sure I wasn't missing much.  When in the furball between the CV and a base, I'm still in the upper 30's.

Just making sure I wasn't supposed to be running around 60 or so and I was missing out. (I also run full range or ground range and full details etc..., so I could probably salvage a few extra from dialing those down)

You could salvage more than a few if your running full details.

Also for me turning off skins, weapons effects, etc always helps save fps in furballs.

comment-i- got a big boost by switching to 128 bit textures... but I still get REAL SLOW

when the fog/cloudcover comes in or over lots of fires/smoke and ack/tracers

question -- I normally fly the Hellcat and it obviously was not constructed of a whole lot of those polygon thingys.  If and when they modernize it will I see a performance hit?  .. maybee thats why I seem to do better in the cat?

My views on this subject have evolved during the 15+ years I've been flying sims. Back in the early days 15FPS felt wonderful on my 386 machines under MSDOS. As machines got faster and I got into the 30FPS range, I was of the opinion that there wasn't much difference between 15 FPS and 30. I still find anything above 15FPS adequate, but I need 20FPS or more for confident gunnery.

Nowadays, if I EVER see my framerate drop below 20 (even for a brief moment under the most complex and crowded conditions) then I immedately make some kind of adjustment. Usually this is just tweaking details downward a bit, but sometimes it means buying a new video card or faster processor.

My current machines are all running under LINUX, and that costs me about 10% in Framerates (because they are emulating DirectX). Nevertheless, with today's powerful hardware, my framerates range between about 50 and 500 FPS.  Typically I cruise at about 100 FPS when flying level. The framerate dips down a bit when I lower my nose toward a crowded airfield, and it quickly goes up above 200 FPS when I am looking straight up.  When I'm down in the weeds over complex, tree-filled terrain with several other planes in view it drops down to 50 or so. I never have to worry about dipping into the 20s anymore.
