Minor glitch or virus??
« on: October 11, 2007, 11:01:12 PM »
Preface- Yes I know this is not specifically AH related but it could effect my playing of AH.

Went to get my email today and it downloaded and said I have 1 new message. I use Outlook Express. It shows 1 new email in the Inbox and when I try to open that folder it sits there awhile and then closes. It does the same thing when I try to open any folders in Outlook, it sits a few seconds and closes to the desktop.
When I try to scan my computer with eTrust EZ Antivirus I get a 'Could not load or initialize scan engine' error. I did scan with online Trend Micro scanner and it found nothing.
I just downloaded AVG again and am going to install and try a scan with that.

You think I picked up a virus or just a minor/major glitch inside Outlook?

Might be time to get Thunderbird or whatever the mail program is in the Mozilla Firefox family.

I should be done installing, updating and scanning with AVG and I'll either edit this post or post a reply with it's results.

EDIT- AVG didn't find any threats either.

I can now acces the emails, not sure what changed.
I still can't initialise the virus scanner though, I'll try a remove and reload.

AH play does not seem to be effected at all.

I use a program called Mail Washer . Its freeware, and the older version use to "bounce" the emails you selected back to the sending servers making them think it was a bad address, and remove your address from the list. Now that "firetrust" bought it out, you can only pre-view the first couple of lines WITHOUT downloading the whole email. It makes it very easy to pick and choose which emails to download to your computer. It has a very easy set-up to mark "friends" emails, and trash.

Thunderbird the Mozilla Email client has the equivalent of Mail-washer built in.

Plus its controls for filtering, and disposing of those emails are IMO better and easier. I used to run Mail-washer, but It's been all Tbird for me for the last couple years at least.

Also better reinstall your Anti-virus, as I suspect its been altered to not see the problem.

I do have the old Mailwasher but got out of the habit of using it when Adelphia switched over to Roadrunner.
I did download Thunderbird awhile back also but lazy ol me didn't want to go through the effort to move all my OutLook mail over to it.

Of those two I just may go ahead and switch over to Thunderbird when I have some time, say around 2010.
