A glider might be interesting. Put a small tank in it and use it to try to knock down a town or part of a town. Then drop troops from the C47 that towed the glider to capture the base. A mission with 3 or 4 of these could level a town and drop 30-40 troops.

Ju-52 would be a great option for trading some speed to some weaponry. In addition it would have its uses in special events.

Then there could be a perked version of C-47... the Russian Li-2 with a gun turret :)

In reply to this, remember that they will up the number of troops needed to capture a base to match the highest number of troops available on one ship. (Paraphrasing from the last Convention Q&A) Do you want to wait for 10 or 28 troops to land/run?

Waco glider with Jeep options would be good.

In theory a single c-47 should be able to tow 2 of them to the drop zone, release, and get out of the area. As the 2 gliders coast in for a rough landing.

I think it would take some interesting coad to make it happen but the idea has potential.
