56th FG request
« on: October 10, 2007, 03:01:52 PM »
Howdy all,

I'm a bit new here and totally not artistic, so I was hoping I might beg a favor of some artists here!

The P-47D-40 and N model have no 56th FG skins!! Such heresy! I know the 56th flew a number of late model D's and M's which for the most part could be taken for D-40's and N models.

Here is an M model:

A neat M model is one of the Polish pilots named Witold Lanowski. I can scan a pic later.

Thanks for any consideration,
VonKost

If you can find a D30 with a fillet or a D40 that the 56FG flew post it here.

Post it and I'll do it, unless Fencer had plans to do so already, then it's his show. If not, I'm game for the D-40 job.

I'm searching the few books I have and some internet sites. I know that the fillet was a field mod, but my sources are limited. Does there exist anywhere a record of Aircraft assigned to the 56th by serial number and model number? No N models were assigned to squadrons in europe, they arrived too late in england.

UPDATE: I found some resources, a list of P47 production serial numbers and a list of 56th FG serial numbers. I'll be crossreferencing them for model numbers ASAP. If it turns out there are no D-40's, we still need an M model as the 56th did fly a lot of those ;)

I checked and I found no D30s or D40s that were assigned to the 56th FG quite some time ago.

By all means continue your search, Nomde and his gang would love to have a D40 in their colors.

I'm sure everyone's been to the 56th FGLittle Friends webpage.

Could you do a D40 as an M since the fillet is there?

Bout as close as you can get shape wise anyway.  Some of those M markings are kinda nice.

No D40's but some D30's according to serials on Little Friends. here is the list in the D30 serial range:

D-30-RE
44-20432 P-47D 63 UN-
44-20455 P-47D 63 UN-Y Comstock Col. Harold E "Bunny"
44-20455 P-47D 63 UN-X       UN-Y per SB
44-20543 P-47D 63 UN-F
44-20555 P-47D 62 LM-M
44-20555 P-47D 62 LM-I
44-20578 P-47D 62 LM-H
44-20594 P-47D 63 UN-F Fahringer Capt. John C
44-20597 P-47D 63 UN-W
44-20615 P-47D 62 LM-B Butler Lt. George H West o' the Rockies Lost 23 Dec 44 - Lt. Lewis R Brown POW 11307
44-20617 P-47D 62 LM-R
44-20626 P-47D 61 HV-X
44-20711 P-47D 63 UN-W
44-20721 P-47D 62 LM-Q Perry Lt. Alfred O
44-20722 P-47D 63 UN-C

I have not been able to locate any of photo's of 56th fighters that have had field modded fillets though one source says they were commonly fitted to D27's and up. I will look through my few books again to try and find any of the above S/N's.
