Does anyone know if labor can be taxed?

While getting my car fixed few months ago, I saw a guy raise a lot of stink over being taxed for labor. I never saw anyone complain before, but what he was saying made sense.... so, can fed/state tax labor?

Labor is taxed in Texas. May vary from state to state.

"The real price of every thing, what every thing really costs to the man who wants to acquire it, is the toil and trouble of acquiring it. What every thing is really worth to the man who has acquired it, and who wants to dispose of it or exchange it for something else, is the toil and trouble which it can save to himself, and which it can impose upon other people."(Wealth of Nations Book 1, chapter V)-- Adam Smith

The only thing taxed is labor.

Actually, that's a development from fairly recent history. It never used to be. And, there are exceptions. Labor in a vehicle repair shop is still not taxed in Texas, for instance.

Russian, its a state-by-state issue, the Feds thankfully haven't yet intruded into this area.

While computer repair is. What's the rationale here?
