Joystick Problem?
« on: November 06, 2007, 04:17:05 PM »
I'm using a Saitek EVO stick and combat trim is turned off. The EVO stick controls the roll and pitch axis. Yaw is controlled by a set of CH pedals. When I go otr my trim indicator is completely to the right for rolll and all the way up for elevator. Rudder is centered. Is this the default setting or should the game start flight with all conrol surfaces centered? I can't find any "clear trims" command. Is there one? Also when I engage autopilot, the roll trim indicator moves towards center then back to the right and autopilot kicks out. Turning up the deadband solves the autopilot problem but doesn't make the trim start centered. I've calibrated in Windows and in the game as well. I'm thinking of upgrading to a CH stick and throttle but want to make sure that will solve the problem before I fork out the cash.

Make sure you calibrate your stuff first in windows, then in the game.

Next thing to check is the "spiking" of your stick. it sounds like you might have a problem there. After you calibrate, click the advanced button on the clipboard. This will swing out a panel that will have two tall blue boxes. In the main field click on the axis you want to check, then watch the lines in the blue box, they should be steady, and only move when you move your stick in that axis.

If it bouncing around, increasing the dead band can calm it down

Planes spawn to the runway with trim set as if "auto take off" is going to handle the take off controls whether you have it enabled or not.  If you are well below stall speed, like when you first spawn, torque is a dominate force acting on your plane since there is not lift.  Hence the aeliron will be trimmed very hard, as will your elevators be trimmed up for the slow speed.

If you are using "auto take off" the trim will balance up within a few seconds of the gear being retracted.  But very rarely will "in trim" be the same as "trim centered".  Except for the P-38, your roll will need trimmed off center to account for torque and p-factor.

What many players do, who want to trim manually, is also have a button set for "toggle combat trim".  When you flip CT on and off briefly, it will bring the trim close to neutral (neutral not being the same as centered), and you can fine tune the trim from that point.

Other than spiking issues from your stick, I'm not seeing anything unusual with your experience.  The object of your trim is to adjust so that absent stick input, your plane does not roll or pitch nose down or up.  Again, usually your trim indicators will be off center when in perfect trim.

Hey Trap,

Not sure about your stick, but if you have any rotories configured you might wanna make sure that they're centered and neutral. I've had problems many times with being knocked out of trim because I accidentally trimmed and didn't reset my dial.

Also, I've noticed that occasionally when I try to auto-climb out from a field, or even auto-level, that it'll level for a second, and then i'll roll out to the left, knocking auto-trim off. I just re-calibrate my joystick in Aces High and it seems to fix the problem.

WMLute mentioned to me over vox that he's had this happen too and it seems to be a common problem, though I haven't figured out why.

I keep lookin for ya in the skies of the Late War, but never seem to find you. =(
We must be flying at odd times. I haven't seen Cajun in forever either!

Chapel How ya been man? How are things over in Haze Land ?
Cajun and I don't fly in the late war mains, to much of a culture shock coming from the WB's WWII arena. We fly in the mid-war main, the AvA and the events. We're on several times a week. Shoot me an email or PM me if you want fly together sometime.
