We'll keep the nice Italy map, but move the plane set and radar settings up to the end of the war.

MARE NOSTRUM

Welcome to the sunny Mediterranean.

We now move to 1944-45.  By this time the
Luftwaffe had generally evacuated Italy - but
these planes defended the southern areas of
the Reich against the 15th Air Force's
strategic assault.  The Allied plane set is
historic to Italy, with the exception of the
carrier planes.  If the British carriers had
been committed to Italy, they would have flown
these planes.

As before, geographic ownership has been
adjusted to maximize the ability to run
different types of missions, as well as to
enable the usual AvA combat.  The focus is
on tactical combat, so there are no heavy
bombers.

This is the type of planeset I'm always curious about as it relates to the AvA (CT) set up. By now the luftwaffe focus has gone entirely to bomber defense and the D9 and K4 are basically pure E fighters. I'd have thought the XVI vs the 8 since the 8 was primarily a pac plane...or so I thought. I thought that the IX would be the spit in the MTO...even in late 44.

109K4 is easily the best plane in the set if its flown right IMO...curious to see how this set breaks down as week progresses. Allied has alot of interesting choices but i'd bet its 80%+ spitVIII's most of the time. So your setting up a furballer vs E fighter scenario even more so then normal.

Personally will be interesting since the 205 will have much tougher sledding while the A-20 will be in a much better enviornment for furballing:D ...

Seems to me that it was Guppy who said the Spit8 was in the Med, and whoever wrote the fine Wikipedia article agrees:

"This variant served almost exclusively overseas in the Mediterranean with both the Desert Air Force and the USAAF, and in the Pacific beginning in 1943 with the Royal Australian Air Force.

In the Mediterranean Theatre in Italy, the Mk VIII fought with the United States Army Air Force. The 31st and 52nd Fighter Groups operated the fighter for some time until, in March 1944, they had their aircraft replaced by the P-51D Mustang, an inferior" aircraft according to many 31st FG members,[citation needed] which was adopted because of its long-range escort capability. Over 300 kills were claimed by the two fighter groups while flying Spitfires."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarine_Spitfire_variants#Mk_.C2.A0VIII

I freely admit I am no authority on Spitfires, so if there's some evidence that 9s or 16s were in the Med in late 1944-early 1945, we'll put them in.

In a broader sense, though, this isn't an attempt to set up a meeting between Spitfires and 109K-4s.  For better or worse, these are the planes that people were flying in this part of the world during this time frame (so far as I can tell!), so that's why they're here.  I imagine that anyone who picks a Spit will get bored quickly as the fights move away from him.  Although I agree with you that the 109K is probably the best fighter, it's not an easy plane to learn to fly well or to shoot well, and typically the 51s and late model 38s deal with it quite competently.

Not arguing at all OM, certainly will bow to guppys knowledge on all things spitfire. All I know about spits in the Med is that Bob Hoover was shot down by a 190 while flying a spit (V I think)....

I was simply speculating about the impact of the new set on gameplay. From the allied perspective other then the SpitVIII all the planes require thought and good handling vs the 109s. Jugs, Ponies & 38's are all obviously competative but its a good match both ways. The 205 matches up well with the above but is double negative vs the VIII. Not really s problem in a 1 on 1 or 1 on 2...but a gaggle of spits will just run down a 205.

I've always felt the 40-43 plane sets are the best balanced in the ETO/MTO.

As a new kid on the block I'm curious do see how this set plays out...

The K-4 is actually one of the most interesting matchups for the A-20. Obviously the K controls the fight...but most K drivers need to get in close to hit with the 30mm...

The A-20 can sometimes absorb a couple of 30mm and keep on flying. So it often comes down to what damage the 30mm does and if the K left a window to counter punch...its a long couple seconds going from 400 to 800 if the sawzall can draw a bead on you. Storch stomped me pretty good the one time he ran into the A-20. Since you guys fly the 109 vs spitty match ups alot your much much better in the verticals then a "normal" 109 driver.

The one thing I've noticed in my few A-20 hops is that the "average" AvA stick prosocutes an attack from a +E state much better then an "average" MA pilot. Of course thats Dace, JJ and Storch... JJ was much better the 2nd time around. Now if the A-20 has the perch then its a bear to handle...

To be honest i'm gonna try and pick my spots with the A-20 since its a magnet in a furball for some reason:)....but i'm sure you'll get a few chances:aok

The version of the Mk IX we have in AH would be wholly inappropriate to 1944 setups.  It is a 1942-43 Merlin 61 Mk IX.  If there were Mk IXs in Italy in 1944 they would have been Merlin 66 powered LF.Mk IXs very similar to the Mk XVI.  If they were there at all.

I doubt it.  The set isn't too different than the 1945 Rhine set-ups, where you usually see Jugs-and-Ponies-a-plenty.
