Crash landings and consequences
« on: November 12, 2007, 02:29:28 PM »
I know it's possible to crash-land aircraft- I just had to belly in a B-25 in the offline practice (field ack nailed the landing gear, natch,) but I was wondering what the consequences of that was.

If you belly in a plane at your airfield, it counts as a "ditch," apparently. The game seems to track pilot deaths, but how is ditching different then bailing out?

If I belly land a perk plane, did I "save" the plane? Or do I lose the perk points for anything other then a wheels-down landing?

While we're at it, what is the consequences of bailing out and being "captured?"  Does the game just track pilot deaths vs. shootdowns for fun or is there more to it?

If you belly her in and stop on pavement, it counts as a normal landing.  If she slides onto the grass, it's a ditch.

-That's why I like to save a little bit o rocket fuel on the 163, just incase she slides off the runway, you can power her back over to pavement.

If you belly land your plane on concrete on a friendly base (port, airfield, vehicle base), it's still "landed", not a ditch.

If you belly land in friendly territory, it's a "ditch".

If you belly land in enemy territory (=closest base is an enemy one), you will get a "captured".

Benfits of ditching & bailing vs just crashing:

The actual amount of perk & score points you get for a given sortie is depending on mission ending multiplier:

Landed      1.0
Discoed      0.25
Bailed         0.5
Ditched       0.75
Captured    0.4
Killed          0.25
Crashed     0.25

And you do loose perk points when flying a perked ride for everything other than a "landed", but getting a "ditch" will save you half of your precious perk points.

bail = death for k/d determination purposes.
A ditch is not.
