Preferred disk cloning method?
« on: November 27, 2007, 10:06:15 AM »
I have purchased a larger size HDD to replace the current one.  I'd like to do a direct image of the older drive onto the newer drive.  I have both Ghost and Driveimage XML progams.  Which do you prefer or is there another program that's easier to use?

Also, while I'm at it, I can't find a way to get PC Cilin off of my computer.  Anytime I try to uninstall it it asks for a password.  Funny thing is when I type in the password I made for it it states that it is incorrect.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

If you have Ghost, then keep using it. I use about about 20 times a week and it never fails to work as promised.

No real sense in buying a new program if you already have one, unless you're not that happy with it.

I've been using, (and recommending it to clients),  Acronis True Image for cloning for years, and it's great. Real easy to use too.

Let me rephrase, I have both of those programs at my disposal but I've yet to use either of them.  Thanks for the input though.

Acronis gets the thumbs up over ghost for me.

Theres a few things Acronis did that ghost didn't (or didn't used to).

Since you guys are on the topic and I've kind of been curious about it myself.  With any of the programs mentioned above, is it possible to clone an image of the HDD (if the original drive is in a raid setup on) onto one single HDD?  I.E., take a RAID 0 or 1 'image' and put it onto one HDD.

Ah, then if you've never used either one, then Acronis is easier to use.

I've been using Ghost2003 for so long, I have bootable floppies, CDs, thumbdrives, CF Cards, and even a PE environment that all use it.

There really isn't anything Acronis can do that Ghost *can't* but Acronis will do it without you having to learn a lot of stuff or make weird bootable media, and it is very reliable too.

Dunno bout recent versions, but ghosts handling of errors on disks sucked compared to acronis, with acronis you could either tell it to ignore all errors. Whereas ghost either wouldn't proceed (std version I think) or wanted you to press i for every bad sector (corporate version). Std Ghost used to be pretty limited in partition formats (FAT, and FAT32) whereas standard acronis did a bit more.

Mind you this was from a couple of years back, but these features + symantec = I never looked back from choosing acronis.

There are various startup flags you can use with Ghost.exe that let it handle bad media or other errors in all sorts of interesting ways. And I've used Ghost for everything from Linux (ext2, ext3, rfs), BSD, OS/2, fat16/32, and all the NFTS flavors out there. Heck, you can still use it GUI-less-ly (is that a word?) solely from the command line if you like writing batch files.

It's kind of enchanting to see a DOS program still do all this after all these years.
