FSO squadron structure?
« on: April 28, 2008, 10:54:38 PM »
CO's,  Just a curious question here;  How is your squadron structured when participating in FSO?

FSO's can be hectic when organizing your squad while at the same time... staying informed.  Below is an example of how I have structured my squad in FSO.

CO (RATTFINK) -  Mission lead and in charge of the MOTD.  I always make a copy of the FSO orders and paste it into my file <insert your callsign here> and sqdmotd files so that when squaddies who haven't seen the orders, can.

XO - Squad mission briefing officer.  Goes over the orders and aircraft information.

Assistant XO - In charge of squad numbers & squad communications officer.  He always keeps track of our squads turnout & directs squaddies to the MOTD if squaddies haven't seen the orders on our message board.

Assistant XO - Liaison & FSO CoOp organizer.  He contacts the squads in our flight and goes over the routs, and strategic planning.

THE UNFORGIVEN runs about the same way. Rep0 and myself take care of the updates, ride requests etc, then forward all orders to the group using our group email.  We have a couple of guys that we delegate as flight leads that take care of squad invites, plane loadouts, etc.  We also like to get everyone involved, so we will sometimes rotate flight lead duties to get some of the newer guys some lead experience.  We also will let different people try their hand at orders if we are tasked for CiC duties.  This seems to work really well, as it gets them thinking of the whole picture instead of just 1 slice of the pie.   :aok

I'll reiterate my CO here. We try to stick with some structure. We are a large squad and like our Squad CO, Plissken, says, it's like herding cats. The moments before take off are usually hectic.

We have a great group and they are acclimating to FSO structure very well. We've been a part of FSO for a long time now and its the reason I stay around here and stay up late on Friday nights.

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.

Basically the same

CO Mission Lead, Coordinates with all squads in strike package. Final approval on any orders or changes. Responsible for emailing orders.
XO Assists in order creation. Makes sure squad members and guests are in uniform and ready to launch. Monitors Command channel
Asst. XO does the same as the XO but monitors communication between squads in same strike package

My command tells me go kill and blow stuff up so that's what i do. :D Seriously though pretty much the same as you guys have it set up. We also practice with different people running a wing if we split into 2 wings or more. This let's everyone get some experience with running more than just there airplane around and let's them realize how hard it is to keep command of a group and perform the mission. I know the first flight i was wing commander i think i got more grey hairs out of that than the actual battle. Think what we do is put 1 or 2 of the officers per wing if we split then they can help the designated wing commander if he needs it.

Pre-frame, objectives and orders are received from the Admin CM and CIC respectively, and are sent out to all squadron members.  Squadron members are expected to show up having read through the orders.

I show up at T-30 and begin any coordination necessary with adjacent/supporting units.  Our squad SOP is for everyone to be in the tower NLT T-15.  Mission brief begins at T-10 and usually lasts 5 minutes or so.  The brieft includes aircraft, skin, load-out, takeoff direction, flight assignments, formations for climb and en route, and any mission specific information. The last 5 minutes before we roll is for anyone that needs to hit the head or whatever.

During the mission, we usually have around 8 or so, so we break into two flights of four.  Each flight is assigned a color, and each pilot a number.  We maintain section integrity (two flights) up to, including, and ideally, after first contact.  Section lead is the mission commander for the frame--in charge of leading and directing the entire squad.  Flight leads are in charge of their respective flight.

You better get on them, it may cause your squad to be removed from FSO.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!
