High Gamma/Brightness in Video Playback
« on: December 05, 2007, 04:36:54 AM »
I've suffered from this for a while now and have dealt with it.  But I'm fed up with it now.  Any type of video file I play and watch, the brightness/gamma on the video is fairly high and gets to be quite annoying (I'll see if I can get a camera pic of it since a screenshot obviously won't work).  I've messed with the Brightness controls etc on everything I can think of, on the monitor, in the Nvidia Control Panel and in any media player (WMP 11 or Divx etc) I can think of.  All settings are currently at default levels and still I have the problem.  I've tried to counter act the brightness by lower gamma, brightness, contrast etc with no luck of curing the problem.

I actually run two LCD monitors and the problem occurs on both screens.  I can't say when the problem started (probably 6+ months ago) and prior to that I never had any problems.  I believe the problem is based on my Nvidia GPU drivers, although that last two updates in their drivers have not corrected the problem.  No matter the file format, WMV, AVI, MPG, high brightness is there.  Games are not affected.

The only thing I can think of on how to fix the problem is removing all the Nvidia drivers and reinstalling them (possibly rolling back to an older driver #, but before I do that I'm just looking to see if anyone has any ideas or input on it.  Or if that doesn't work, uninstalling all my video codecs and reinstalling those.

The gamma settings in nvidia 8800 drivers have always been porked.

You'll need to find the overlay settings in nvidia control panel and then adjust the RGB gamma settings there. Problem is they don't tend to stick permanently.

I had the same problem, just the opposite. All my video was red/black dark.

Yup, that seemed to fix it.  I was in that menu before but was selecting controls for the monitor, not just unselected where it changed colors on video.  Thanks a ton!
