Ya know what,
I think it's a wounderful idea myself, but theres just one thing wrong. If this is a go, I sugest that HiTech, Skuzzy and the rest of the staff at HiTech Creations Inc. preform the services, after all it is the fallen who put there .02 cents on HTC's pay check.

I don't mean to affend anyone

Just my two cents here, but a memorial flight for fallen players should have some sort of structure to it.

If it were to be a memorial flight for myself this is what I would want to see.

7 Sherman tanks lined up side by side in front of the tower with a jeep parked center to the formation out front. Guns to max elevation and the jeep driver directs the fire order of all seven tanks.

The flyby would start out with all the members of my squad and then anyone else wishing to participate following behind them. Alt would be 500ft down the runway heading as to pass in front of the control tower. No more than 4 abreast during the flyby.

As the last of the main flight crosses the far end of the runway a flight of 4 Me-262's would fly over the tower crossing the runway at 500ft and 400mph in a tight finger four formation. As they cross over the tower number 3 pulls up in a sharp vertical climb, smoke on, level off at 3000ft smoke off and departs the area.

After the missing man formation has passed and the smoke from number 3 shuts off, the tanks fire 3 rounds each starting from the left tank down the line with a 5 second interval between each tank firing. Interval will be called by the jeep commander in charge of the gun detail.

Once the gun salute is completed all pilots may land.

That's how I would do it.

As far as being a participant in something like that, absolutely. Count me in.

I think it's a great idea. And I don't think it would offend anyone to have a organized Honor Guard. If a Squad wants to pay tribute themselves then that's fine too, nothing wrong with that.

I myself have participated in Honor guard services as part of the 7 man 21 gun salute during my tour of duty from 1977 to 1984. While Stationed at Ft Bliss Texas  in the 978th Military Police Co. from 1977 to 1980 I was also selected to be in Operation "Orbit Stars" which was code name for the Funeral detail of our last 5 star General Omar N. Bradley, although he did not die during my tour there, it goes to show the military was planning this big event well ahead so that everything would go smoothly and give tribute to a great man. I did get to meet and Shake hands with General Bradley as he visited our Mess hall on Thanksgiving in 1979. He was in a wheelchair by that time.

I guess my point is that a Memorial Service done by a well practiced team looks sharp in real life and was very much appreciated by family. Sure, performing this in a arena with animated vehicles and planes is far from the real thing... but the thought is there.

Put me down for the Honor Guard.

Who is in charge of this outfit?

History on the missing man formation:

The first funeral flyover of aircraft occurred during World War I, when British fighter pilots honored the funeral of German ace Manfred von Richthofen ("the Red Baron"). Flyovers of airfields became standard practice in the Royal Air Force, to show the ground crews how many survivors had returned from a mission. In 1936, King George V of the United Kingdom received the first recorded flyover for a non-RAF funeral.

The United States adopted the tradition in 1938 during the funeral for Major General Oscar Westover with over 50 aircraft and one blank file. By the end of World War II, the missing man formation had evolved to include the pull-up. In April 1954, United States Air Force General Hoyt Vandenberg was buried at Arlington National Cemetery without the traditional horse-drawn artillery caisson. Instead, Vandenberg was honored by a flyover of jet aircraft with one plane missing from the formation.

Also in 1954, Captain Joseph McConnell was killed while testing a modified F-86 Sabre at Edwards Air Force Base, California, which was later made into a movie called The McConnell Story, featuring the formation multiple times.

I'd be up for this.

I know from participation in previous memorial flights how difficult it is to do this with the precision everyone would agree the events deserve. A trained group of flyers / tankers would be good.

The only thing I'd say is that it would obviously be important to respect the wishes of squads and friends in such occassions and to understand if they wished to handle memorial flight duties themselves.

Gents let's do this

All interested parties please email me at dichodog@gmail.com

Please provide a return email address and start a discussion about how to organize, practice, etc.

I know the holidays has everybody busy so, for now, we're just looking for people who will be interested in being part of the group.

Once we have a roster I think we can discuss organization, wings, whatever.

Mark.. glad to see you're interested
