DVD to mpeg
« on: December 23, 2007, 03:50:02 PM »
I've got a 500G external hooked up on my home network and thought it would be cool to be able to rip my dvd's to the hard drive so anybody could watch any movie they wanted at any time.  I'd prefer a free program to buying one.  Anybody got any ideas?

Most movies are protected, (except for a few old ones), so first you have to decrypt the movie to your hard disk. That will leave you with a folder with a audio_ts, and video_ts sub folders.  Unfortunately, the video_ts sub folder will have the movie broken into '.vob' files, which have to be played one vob file at a time when using a player, such as media player.

If you're looking to have a movie on your hard disk, that you can play with media player, or some other player, then you'll need a program to convert the vob files into an AVI, Divx, Xvid, etc, etc file.

Program #1 would be DVD Fab Platinum, which costs $49.00.
This program decrypts the movie to your hard disk.

Program #2 would be Alive DVD Ripper, which costs $34.95
This program will convert the decrypted vob files into most common formats, such as AVI, (for editing), Dvix, Xvid, Mov, etc, etc.

There are other programs and some of them are free, but the free ones are pretty much harder to use.

If ya want to learn more, then go here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/

Look under 'Dvd Ripping' to start.

There is an older free program that worked real good but it hasn't been updated in a couple of years. It's called:

DVD Shrink

You can find references to it on the forum above, and probably some download links, (not certain about the links).

Either way, you can read through the forum and find some of the different programs available for what you want to do.

Good Luck!

Arrrrr!

From my experience with it, it can take a while to rip a DVD.  Faster CPU's with good amounts of ram are your friends.
