CHFighterStick Pressure problem
« on: December 19, 2007, 12:16:42 PM »
Here's my problem :-  The "Y" axis on my fighter stick seemed to have 2 centre points.  It's been dogging me for months and very frustrating.  Vast amounts of recalibrating.  Vast amounts of re-centering with the axis wheel.  Only to find the centre point pops back and forth from one setting to another.

By chance (today) I noticed in the CH control calibrator that if I tugged the joystick up and down, the centre point in calibration moved up and down.  To explain in another way... if I rest my hand on the stick (applying little pressure) the centre point of the "Y" axis moves.  I can re-centre it with a lite tug up.  Holding the base and pulling up (vertical) the actual stick part.  Hope that's clear.  I'm not moving the stick through it's axis I'm lifting and pushing the stick.  A kind of pump action if you will.

Where this translates badly for me is, when in game after calibration the simple act of resting my hand on the stick moves it's "Y" axis center.  By pulling "back" in flight it equates to a pump action on the stick.  The centre point moves back and forth with each change in pressure on the stick.

As the stick is out of any warranty I have no problem opening it up.  In fact I did that about 2 weeks ago and made sure all connectors to pots where secure. I even managed to cure a tricky HAT switch while I was at it.  I suppose the question is where would I need to look.  The gimble or the pot seat ?  Has anyone else resolved a similar problem and how ?

XP
Control manager CHCMv40 (I found the newer 1 today)
Powered quality USB hub
Had a CHFighterstick before on this computer with no problems.
Pot connectors cleaned and secure

Thanks in advance of help or suggestion

Actually, i've noticed this with my fighterstick too. When i had it apart a whiles ago, i noticed why it does it. Its in the gimble design itself. Its kind of a clam-shell sort of set-up with two springs per axis - on for up, one for down, with each one returning to the centered home position. When you pull it apart, you'll see what i mean. Hard to describe. I dont think its the pots.

Mine does do this but only very very slightly, and a small dead-band setting dials it out totally.

I wondered if putting stronger tension springs on the gimbles would reduce this issue?

My first CHstick did a similar thing and dead band in game did sort it.  The "y" axis without dead band could move a tad up from center.  About 1/4 of a square in CH control calibrator.  A little wiggle of the stick would see it resume the correct center about a 100+ point in raw scales.

This one is popping about a square at a time nearly 300 points.  The darn plane in the "Y" axis flies like this ~~~~~~ like riding a wave.  I'v tried all sorts of settings with aggressive amounts of damping and dead bands.

So I'll have to take it apart after the Christmass season and butcher the gimbals with my wife's nail file or daub copious amounts of glue or tape to suspect areas.....not good:rolleyes:

I'll post my results of buggering up me stick in January.

I'm having the same problem with the Y-axis.  Only thing I've found that helps is using a deadband of ten (10), which I am not happy with.  Non of the other axis on any of my CH Products has this problem, I have the Fighterstick, Throttle, Rudders and Multi Function Panel.
