Landing w/o a wing

I landed an FM2 on one wing on the runway a few weeks ago.  TC's post is right on (guess that's why he is a trainer :) ).  Keeping speed high and trimming is the trick .

One more thing on the landing, start getting ready for the landing well before the runway.  Get the gear out and flaps down as far as you can keeping the plane under control.  Do this when you have a little altitude so you have space to get it back under control.  Once you get it trimmed out for landing, make a long gradual approach to the runway for landing.

Well said, this is the most important thing when it comes to landing with control surfaces missing.

I once broke both wings off a 262 trying to turn to hard. I then shot down 2 b24s and eventually landed on an airfield. I once tried to land something with 1 wing on cv along time ago (think it was a typhy) i crashed into the tower in a firey explosion:(  mabey it would of helped if the cv was on the same country as me? idk:aok

If this was yesterday about 4PM EST in LW Blue near A7, the F4U may have been mine.

I've been able to land a number of times with most of a wing missing (including once on a carrier), and was able to recover and then hold the aircraft levelish albeit at about 250 mph, with enough control to RTB.

If it was me, then the reason you didn't get the kill was that I was chased 1/2 a sector by one of your brethren in a faster aircraft, who got a pilot kill on me as I approached the field.

On at least several occasions I've had half a wing blown off, and managed to escape when the opponent pulled off believing I was in a fatal spin. I then manage to recover and  limp home.

The key, as mentioned, is airspeed. At least as far as the F4Us go it's best to be in a range where you can get out a notch of flaps. That GREATLY improves stability.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Just a little while ago I was flying in a 190 and got half my wing shot off the guy who shot me must have took me for dead b/c he broke off. I flew home and tried to land but on my first time around my gear broke off which complicated things. But the second time around i landed safely

merry christmas,

How could you still fly if both wings were broke off?? You would probably say it would act like a rocket but wouldnt the engines be broken off also??
or is this just another glitch??

I assume he means wingtips, but yeah, he could have explained a little better.

Yea in frame 2 of the last FSO i had my wingtip blown off by a N1K in a F6f. Managed to limp home 2 sectors away and landed succesfully. Took forever.

I've landed countless times missing most of a wing. It's not that hard to do, but you need to know the plane you are flying. Some are much easier than others.

The trick is to get the plane slow enough so you can get your flaps out, assuming you still have both of them but keep it fast enough it doesn't stall b4 you get the flaps out. Once you get the flaps out it's almost a walk in the park landing.

I had one almost amazing landing in a P38J. I was at 10-12k engaged with a con. He knocked half my wing off while I was already in a dive and going very fast.  I lost control of the plane and fought it all the way to the deck and recovered slightly before hitting the water.

The area was full of cons so I couldn't take the time to slow it down to use flaps. I managed to get it slow enough to get my gears out and touch down of the airfield for a criss cross landing across the field.

While I had landed p38's missing 1/2 wing b4 this one really made me happy because it was an extremely hard landing, because of how hard it had been to save the plane in the air. Well  I got it on the ground doing about 150mph but somehow I couldn't miss the Bomber Hanger that I plowed into the side of. :cry

Another time I managed to break off both wing tips on a 262. To my amazement it actually flew pretty good and IMO was a bit faster missing the wing tips.  However it was a bit hard to land the thing.

I did managed to get a successful landing but it was pretty tough to get it slow enough to get flaps out and keep it from stalling prior to landing.

I once had a wingtip removed and was trying to egress from the fight when another con took the other wingtip. This actually helped me as when the other tip was removed I could come off the flaps more and gain speed. Unfortunately 3 cons continued the chase so I decidedto slow and land in the grass.... they were closing. I landed and turned in behind some trees and all three augered into the trees trying to get me. I was then able to take off and return to base.
