Today my son and I played in our first golf tournament together...a senior/ junior (Father/son) 9 hole capitan's choice at our golf club.

It was the first time my son stepped foot on an actual course...we hit balls at the range and played mini-putt only previously.

We scored a 41!!!  With my maximum handicap (24 I think) that made us a net 29!!!!!  We didn't win though...winnner was a net 24.  But we came 6th..out of 17 teams entered!!!

It isn't much to brag about...but for me...DAYUM I played well.  My son saved us on two holes...holeing a six foot put for par and hitting past my horrible drive on the last hole.

Best day ever.  Honestly.

Thanks guys.

We actually went and played on Sunday also.  My son played the first 9 holes and then putted only on the last nine as he was pretty "golfed out" at that point and I didn't want to push him.  

There were 3 of us playing, a buddy of mine joined us and my brother in-law dropped out at the last minute.  So there was a guy at the club who was by himself and looking to join up with a group.  Normally I don't mind but our last exerience with doing so a week ago wasn't very pleasant, so we tried to discourage the guy but he really wanted to tag along...so we said "ok".

The guy was 60 years old and just crushed his drives dead striaight and about 300 yards, his approach shots seemed to be laser guided and his putting was incredible.  By the 9th hole I look at the scorecard and realise he was 1 over par, at which point I asked him what his handicap was and he replied "These days I play off about a...4."  I looked at my buddy and we both sort of looked at each other with a "Okay...THAT explains it".

What a great guy too....totally unpretentious, didn't try and coach the rest of us unless we asked for a tip, he really encouraged my son (as did my buddy) and was a true pleasure to play with.  In fact it was an honour playing with someone who was that good.  He shot a 74 for the round.

Golf is a great family sport. Time well spent too as there is alot to be learned about courtesy and respect on the course.

Absolutely.

He now understands that talking while someone is hitting is a no-no, dragging his feet and/or running on a green is a big no-no, stepping on someone's "line" before they putt is a no-no, wearing a cap in the restaurant is a big no-no...etc etc.

My buddy even said to him "Don't worry, there are alot of rules but they become easy to remember as you play more."

I look forward to those time Curval, I know it had to be great for you. I took my daughter to the golf course Christmas eve morning with a friend and his son. She's only 4 so she couldn't really do much. But I think she's got the bug for it now.
