Landry Story from me.
One night about 12 years or so ago I was training a rookie cop. We went to Ball's hamburgers at Midway and Northwest Highway to eat. Great burgers and they have t.v.'s all over showing sports.
So we are sitting there in uniform and this grandmother and her granddaughter and grandson are sitting at another booth. I tell the rookie to look at the regal grandmother and grandkids. REAL unusual statement from me. Dont think I ever made a comment like that before or since.
The grandmother looked like what you want all grandmothers to look like. Just a queen. The two grandkids looked like a prince and princess. Just beautiful and well mannered kids. Of course I had no idea who they were.
After a minute a guy walks over dressed in a jogging suit. Very non-descript. Totally non-flashy etc. No hat

He sits with them and is obviously the grand-dad, but with a humble and nice bearing. I looked at him a few minutes (actually they were in a booth, my table faced them). I told the rookie, that guy looks almost exactly like Tom Landry. Rookie turns and looks a few mintues.
He said, that IS Tom Landry. I figured it was so because his house was near there off Northwest Hwy.
Anyway after they finished supper and all they got up to leave. He looked my way, waved and smiled very nicely. I said "Hi Coach Landry." He walked over chatted a moment and was just so nice.
The family watched smiling and I was bold enough to ask him if he would autograph a page on my "whip-out book" cops carry in their shirt pocket. He was pleased to do so, exchanged a few more pleasantries and left.
Class act. His wife was a class act and his grandkids were class. Salute to a fine man we in Dallas Fort Worth will miss.
