I think backing up data you own is still legal in the USA... hopefully we don't try that here, I think some European countries have made it illegal ::rollseyes::

RIAA can say whatever they want, it doesn't make it law... they 'enforce' their 'law' by bullying private citizens in civil court.

So in their eyes, they are saying pretty much 99% of all personal mp3 players have illegally copied music on them.

Mark my words, they will eventually come out and say they want mp3 players banned because it supports illegal copying of music.

Govt should step up and throw the book at the RIAA for anything and everything

Already own two or three copies of almost every album worth a damn.(vinyl, cassette, and/or CD) Now they are complaining about people ripping a song from a CD to play on their mp3 players? **** 'em. The record companies are whining and complaining about album sales being down. Geez there's a suprize, Simple solution, stop signing these no talent, one hit wonder bands. Stop stifling artist creativity. Stop signing these pretty boy, MTV friendly bands. Rock-n-Roll is supposed to be loud, rude, and ugly man. Look at Lemmy.

Bill Gates needs to be thrown in prison. It was his software i used to rip my Maiden CDs to my mp3 player.

In NZ "format shifting" is illegal (we have no fair use clause in our copyright laws). A new law is scheduled to come in allowing 'fair use', but at the last moment the music industry wielded its $$$ and lawyers and they have the option to 'contract' out (ie disallow format shifting on the box t&c's).

I take great pleasure in arguments over here where holier than thou avacados go on about never pirating music - to point out that converting their cd's to mp3's is entirely illegal

No, if they so choose, they sue you for absurd amounts of money, per song "ripped". You then have to spend thousands of dollars defending against the lawsuit, where the people suing you retain lawyers and spend no extra if they use those lawyers to sue you.

Well, my thought was more on: there are millions and millions of people doing it every day, they can't sue everyone, or can they?
And who is monitoring if you rip a song off a CD?

I'd expect they can do something to sore-bought cd's to make them un-rippable, which would be the last time I ever bought one--I would never 'share' them, which is how these people get caught, but disabling ripping them to put on your own mp3 player.....

Everyone needs to do what I've done for years - stop buying their products.

They are greedy up to the point of being evil. Don't buy their stuff! Imagine that every cent of your purchases go to supporting these leaches, legions of lawyers and shelling out lawsuits to other honest citizens like yourself. In fact, at any moment your money can be used to sue you for using your fair use rights.
