Is there software that will back up my programs and then allow me to reinstall them?.

I downloaded a program from school and therefore do not have a hard copy.

Acronis True Image Home is, (IMHO as a tech), the best backup program available. It runs around $50.00.

It's easy to use and reliable, and can backup an individual program or your entire disk.

I have Acronis and it is OK; a few parts are a bit annoying, like if you do manual backups only, it will still say you have no backup because you didn't schedule an automatic backup.  Also, although it says it will backup your various program settings, the list of programs it knows about is very short on my machine.

I have not been able to figure out how to backup my desktop icon settings.  Every time I upgrade my graphics driver it defaults to 800x600 which throws all my desktop icons all over the place.  Is there a way to back up their positions so I don't have to tediously manually reposition them each time?

I only do manual backups with Acronis, and I've seen none of the problems you've mentioned. My settings and all programs are backed up just fine.

The only changes I made were to set the compression to the highest level , and the priority to the highest level.

Everything working just fine for years.  Not sure what's wrong with your setup. You might try posting what settings you use to backup with acronis. Maybe we can see something there.

I was referring to the big yellow warning saying:

"System state: Warning

No backups have been scheduled yet
Result: Have no backup
Backup tasks: Not scheduled"

despite the fact that I've backed up the HD twice manually.

And regarding program settings I was referring only to the "My Application Settings" option, not a full backup (which grabs everything).  I was trying to find a way to backup my Desktop icon settings.

No big deal, just minor annoyances.

Not sure what you mean with that. Are you asking if you should backup to CD's or an external drive?  If so I would back up to the external drive, but Split the archives into DVD sized, (4.7gb) sections. It will still be able to restore from the external drive, but you'll have the option of burning to Dvd's also.

When I first started using True Image, I found problems when one of the cd's I was burning the image to was bad. It would force me to start the image backup over again from start. I found that by saving the image in 4.7gb increments to another hard drive, allowed me to burn to cd, and now dvd using nero or other burning software, if needed. Usually I just restore from an Acronis boot cd over my network, which has worked just fine. Doing things this way just gives me the option of burning to Dvd's, (or cd's if ya want), if I need it.

If you want to burn to cd's, then change the archive split to the cd size instead of the Dvd size.  This is done by using the 'Set the options manually' option under 'Choose Backup Options'.

If this isn't what cha meant, then just ignore my reply... :)

Exactly what I meant. Sure was a poorly worded question though. Thanks for taking the time answer.
