The Internet is for porn... so be thankful
« on: January 09, 2008, 06:35:41 AM »
Apparently, there is a correlation between the access to Internet porn and the decreasing number of sex-related crimes, according to a study:

http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/forumy/2006/06/rape-porn-and-criminality-political.php

Why can't they reach the same conclusion with violence and videogames?

Daniel

Edit: Just realized the report is old (6/2006), but I don't recall anyone mentioning it here...

I really dont find this all that surprising.
In countries that have less hangups about sexuality then the US (which could include just about every other country but some hard core islamic countries in the Mideast)
Sex related crimes are lower then the US

Violence in video games

Actually they have.
I read in a recent study that violence among teens has actually dropped since the release of first person shooters like Doom

LOL yes we had those too.
We also had parents who knew how to use them.
I can honestly say the threat of my father taking a belt to me. And knowing he would, if I did what I was thinking of doing kept me out of more trouble then i all the "talking to" that had ever been tried.

But we had other things too.
We were allowed to play with toy guns, Play soldier, cops& robbers. Cowboys & indians  without fear of someone wanting to throw us on some medication or into therapy.

And we were allowed to draw pictures in school of gunbfights and war scenes without getting suspended do to a absurd "zero tolerence" policy(Thats back in the day when people were allowed to have imaginations too)

And we didnt need to be medicated for bouncing off the walls at home.
ansd yanno why?
Cause by the time we were done playing outside. Running around like little lunatics, Playing soldier,Cops & robbers,, And Cowboys and indians. We were too damn tired to bounce off the walls in the house.

In fact. Our parents had a dandy little cure for when you bounced off the walls in the house,
Didnt require a doctors perscription and didnt cost them a penny. didnt matter if it was 110 degrees outside or 20 below with a wind chill factor making it feel like 200 below.
Sometimes it didnt even matter if it was raining out.
And there were times when it didnt even matter of nobody else was around to play with.

We were told, and often forced to go outside to play with explicit instructions not to come back into the house till we heard the curchbells ring ( which in my neighborhood was 6:00 every night At which point dinner would be on the table in 15 minutes.

Then and ONLY then were you allowed to come back home. And you had 15 minutes to get there.
Show up late. Go to bed hungry.

They never asked where you were going or what you were going to do.
Just "Get out and I dont even want ot hear your voice let alone see you till 6:00"

"But there is nothing to do outside" was NEVER an acceptable excuse
the only responce to that would usually be either

A-"Well make something up."

and if that didnt work

B- Well then if you have nothing to do you can clean out the garage/rake the leaves/mow the lawn or some other chore. Which was always a sure fire cure all for  the nothing to do affliction.

Bet there are a few folks here that are starting to think we shared the same parents LMAO

Wow, time flys. Im 20 now and it seems like yesterday I was shooting my friends with imaginary guns made from hockey sticks and sticks.

There have been many studies like this. Hell even Australia did a study about it because they were trying to use it for fuel to push anti porn legislation.

The study showed that areas with access to porn via Internet and other means had much lower rates of sexual crimes. Unfortunately it wasn't what the Austrian govt wanted to hear because they are in the middle of trying to ban porn online. They also tried to discredit their own study..

Dred, I was raised the same way and glad I was now.  I have some great childhood memories I wouldn't have if I'd been allowed to lay around & watch TV all day. Thx mom:aok

Sounds like mine.   My mom did have one rule though when we went outside... she would say "dont go so far you cant hear me when I call you"  me "How far is that?"
her "Well if you cant hear me when I call you, then you went to far"

we often tested the limits of her voice...
